Job Title:Bus Assistant/Transportation Attendant

Primary Purpose: Ride on the bus to assist the driver by maintaining student discipline and providing individual student support.
Qualifications/Skills:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must be 18 years and older.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to work with fellow employees.
- Mature judgment.
- Proficient oral and written communication skills.
- Physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to assist in evacuating the bus in an emergency.
Experience:
- Day care, nursing home or related experiences dealing with special needs individuals preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Management:
- Monitor student behavior, maintain student discipline and intervene to maintain a safe ride on bus.
- Provide student-specific personal care service for students using a wheelchair or other assistive devices, or for students who have a medical condition/physical condition.
- Escort and assist students with special needs.
- Maintain personal conduct and appearance of a professional manner and that serves as an example to children.
Safety:
- Aid driver in maintaining order and safety.
- Perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus, if needed: walking to rear of bus, exiting the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situations.
- Assist or provide student-specific safety activities such as: escorting on and off bus, car seat/safety harness management, address elopement behaviors.
Other:
- Maintain cleanliness of bus interior.
- Participate in cross training
- Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and co-workers.
- Attend in-service training classes and safety meetings as required by the department.
- Learn assigned routes in order to assist a substitute driver.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment.

- Work with frequent interruptions.
- This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
Physical Demands:
- Repetitive hand motions.
- Frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
Environmental Factors:
- Work outside and inside.
- Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.
