Job Summary:

Secondary Literacy Specialist

Location: Charlottesville High School and Buford Middle School

Reports to: PK-12 Literacy Coordinator

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Secondary Literacy Specialist supports the PK-12 Literacy Coordinator in the organization and coordination of all literacy and ELA activities at the middle and high school levels.

Essential Functions:

Meet on a regular schedule with the Division Literacy Coordinator to ensure alignment of work
Facilitate the development and ongoing revision of the ELA curriculum for the middle and high school levels
Assist in coordinating middle and high school literacy programs by supporting MTSS processes and systems
Organize and facilitate secondary writing assessments and scoring events, including the High School Writing Portfolio Assessment (WPA)
Maintain training resources related to scoring writing and the High School WPA
Assist in coordinating the activities of the middle and high school literacy curriculum and materials selection
Collaborate with secondary department chairs and PLC leads to facilitate the implementation, analysis, and communication of English and writing assessments and promote the use of student achievement data to drive planning for high quality, research-based, culturally responsive instruction in PLCs
Promote vertical alignment across the middle and high school literacy programs to assist with student transitions and academic achievement
Assist in the selection of secondary literacy programs needed by the schools and make appropriate recommendation
Keep informed of the latest research, trends, and development in secondary literacy to disseminate to principals and teachers
Collaborate with reading specialists, instructional coaches, and teachers to develop PL, including demonstration lessons and collaborations
Participate in division-wide leadership team meetings
Collaborate with the PK-12 ELA Coordinator to manage technology platforms related to literacy, curriculum, and assessment (Illuminate DnA, NewsELA, EduClimber, Lexia, etc)
Provide division-level professional development sessions for secondary teachers and reading specialists
Assist in preparation of division and School Board reports as they relate to the middle and high school
Spend 60-75% of specialist time in classrooms supporting literacy instruction, interventions, and supporting students (divided between Buford and CHS based on data)
Attend secondary English PLCs and/or planning meetings
Support teachers through lesson planning using the CCS instructional framework model and curriculum resources
Support teachers with intervention planning, grouping for instruction, and providing resources for teachers
Modeling/Co-teaching lessons in English classrooms
Facilitate implementation of the CHS Writing Portfolio Assessment in Grades 9, 10, and 11
Analyze student reading and writing data with teachers
Analyze school-wide English reading and writing assessment data and monitor data dashboard
Monitor English reading and writing program and curriculum data
Provide and facilitate professional learning for teachers (division & site-based)
Observe teachers through instructional rounds with Instructional Coach
Provide tiers of support data
Spend 25-40% of specialist time supporting students
Teach at least one English class at CHS
Support intervention planning and intervention strategies
Provide Tier 2 intervention as needed (push-in)
Provide and/or support Tier 3 intervention as needed (pull-out)
Collaborate with the Special Education and ESL teachers for student intervention services
Perform other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s Degree in reading or a related field with a Virginia teaching license and at least three years of teaching experience are required. Reading endorsement is preferred. A Virginia administrative license is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Typically, the job is performed in an office setting primarily using computer office equipment. Frequent travel to schools and occasional state-wide and regional travel is required. Attendance at meetings, both during the school day and beyond, is required. There is frequent interaction with principals, teachers, other central office leadership and the public. Other physical activities are required, such as, but not limited to bending, stooping, reaching, and grasping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, visual acuity is required for monitoring and determining needs; this position is subject to inside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards. The job generally requires approximately 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing.

The Secondary Literacy Specialist reports to and is evaluated by the PK-12 Literacy Coordinator.
