Position Overview:
Medical Assistant instructors play a critical role in the success of the Training Fund sponsored Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium (HCAC) Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program. They hold the experience, skills, and knowledge needed to train the next generation of medical assistants. The person hired for this role will instruct, observe, and guide apprentices as they master the knowledge, lab skills, and competencies they need to be successful in the field. The Medical Assistant Instructor provides instruction both in-person and via online platforms to prepare medical assistant apprentices for success in the field, and helps administer the hybrid Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program. This is a full-time staff position primarily in-person, with some hybrid online work required. The applicant must be able to work in-person at locations from Northgate to Renton at least 3 days per week. Candidates will be evaluated on the full range of their lived and learned experience, professional background, volunteer experience, and direct and transferable skills.
Organizational Overview:
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund (Training Fund) is a non-profit, labor/management partnership between eight major healthcare employers and the largest healthcare union in Washington State. The Training Fund was formed in 2008 and is a statewide program that addresses the workforce needs of participating employers and supports the career, knowledge, and skill aspirations of SEIU Healthcare 1199NW members. The Training Fund is the sponsor of the state-registered Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium (HCAC) and of the Virtual Healthcare Institute (VHI) serving a range of regional employers, unions, union members, and student candidates.
Essential Functions:
Incumbent must have the skills, abilities and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Provide instruction to Medical Assistant Apprentices in-person and via online platforms to multiple training sites with classes ranging in size and potentially exceeding 20 apprentices;
- Coordinate with clinical educators, instructors, program managers, and other program partners to provide effective instruction to medical assistant apprentices;
- Demonstrate laboratory skills such as venipuncture, injections, and sterile technique, and work closely with apprentices to ensure proficiency in these skills;
- Train new instructors and collaborate with them to create engaging lesson plans and course materials;
- Keep and monitor apprentice class attendance and assist with program coordination;
- Provide information, as requested, to apprentices’ employer mentors/supervisors regarding course content and scheduling such that employers can coordinate the apprentices’ work activities;
- Coordinate and provide direct support and support services to apprentices as necessary;
- Schedule, coordinate, and lead make-up days to ensure apprentices have the required hours for completion of their apprenticeship;
- Ensure each instruction location is re-stocked with supplies and equipment in a timely manner, and kept in professional order;
- Work cooperatively with apprentices, instructors, union staff leaders, employers, employer-based educators, local community colleges and universities, and other program partners;
- Interact with and maintain working relationship with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies to facilitate program objectives;
- Attend partner meetings as needed, gathering input, and discussing and resolving challenges to ensure the continued partnership and funding for the program;
- Ensure proper documentation of all participants is established and ensure participant information is kept confidential;
- Create and file various program documentation/information as required;
- Be on call for urgent apprentice, instructor, apprenticeship, and other developing operational issues, and have flexibility and professional skills and responsiveness for such situations, in cooperation with Training Fund staff;
- Assist with the design & creation of program resources and educational materials to improve the medical assistant program;
- Participate in the ongoing development and refinement of the medical assistant program curriculum;
- Work with program administrator, apprentices, instructors, and other program partners to promote a positive learning environment;
- Ability to travel periodically to remote instructional locations in the North Seattle area for logistics or infill instruction;
- Ability to work flexible hours, evenings and weekend days when scheduled;
- Ability to work in person at least 3 days per week at the assigned Training Fund classroom/lab or clinical site(s) in the North Seattle Region;
- Occasional to every other month full time, 5 days a week, in-person (Covid-Dependent) assignments at regional teaching/staging locations for classes and labs;
- Acts as an organizational representative in all situations, setting a strong example of professionalism, work completion and quality, and commitment to organizational goals and ethics;
- Establishes work priorities in a highly organized manner while maintaining flexibility in scheduling and adhering to quality requirements and deadlines; and,
- Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Three years plus of experience as a Medical Assistant
- Minimum one (1) year of experience as a practicing MA-C/mentor/preceptor/MA supervisor, and/or other education/training, apprenticeship or workforce development work;
- Medical Assistant – Certified Washington State credential preferred, active – in good standing;
- Ability to work with, support, and advance engagement with employer partners, labor unions and staff and to collaborate effectively in labor/management settings;
- Ability to work with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive peer group;
- Organizational and data tracking skills;
- Proficient computer skills;
- Ability to accept and deliver feedback in a constructive manner;
- Ability to connect with and motivate potential members to engage in education and training programs;
- Ability to work with and guide others when problem solving;
- Work effectively with individuals from academically, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds and understand different learning styles;
- Current with changes in the field and experience incorporating work updates into practice;
- Participation in continuing education opportunities to maintain relevant certifications;
- Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulation;

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal;

- Successful completion of background check is required;
- Valid Washington State Driver License and access to a reliable insured vehicle;
- Willingness to travel, as needed. Primary travel is currently limited to Washington state;
- Willingness to be vaccinated as required by medical facilities hosting program clinic, clinical, and instruction locations; and,
- COVID full-vaccination documentation required or proof of meeting state or federal law, including medical disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, for not being vaccinated.
Additional Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Knowledge and experience supporting and/or assisting working adults enrolled in apprenticeship and healthcare coursework;
- Knowledge of student support services, college placement, advising, registration and enrollment processes;
- Understanding of unions and ability to work in a joint labor/management environment;
- Understanding of accelerated learning platforms and/or education or apprenticeship programs;
- Experience or knowledge of registered apprenticeship and or academic instruction;
- Experience educational record keeping and documenting practices;
- Experience meeting the needs of multiple partners and participants in employer-based workforce development programs;
- Zoom meeting setup experience and/or foundational IT and classroom technical equipment support and training experience (including projectors, microphones, and multi-computer configurations;
- Proven record of working collaboratively to meet performance goals; and,
- Bilingual skills preferred.
Compensation:
- Annual salary beginning at $70,040.

- 1.0 FTE, Exempt position (Grant funded through June 2024. Position planned for extension, but not guaranteed. Will be extended if additional funding is obtained).
