EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.Confer with certificated staff to plan instructional activities, discuss student academic progress and behavior, and implement activities to meet the individual needs of students; assist in facilitating students into general education classrooms and other learning environments. ETutor individual or small groups of students in a variety of academic subjects to explain and reinforce learning concepts; correct classroom and homework assignments; compute and record scores as assigned. EProvide assistance, participate with, and monitor students in activities such as educational games, reading stories, songs, arts and crafts, and physical education exercises; observe and record the social and academic progress of students. EParticipate in the monitoring, discipline, and behavior modification of students; redirect inappropriate student behaviors; implement behavior plans for students in accordance with District procedures; record and report student behavior issues. E Perform a variety of personal hygiene activities for students such as toileting, diapering, and dressing; prepare lunch trays and feed students unable to feed themselves; assist students to sit, stand and walk. EPerform physical health care treatments such as tracheotomy suctioning, gastrostomy tube feedings, colostomy care, seizure monitoring, and blood sugar testing following appropriate training; maintain related records. ELift and position students into and out of wheelchairs, braces, lifts and other orthopedic equipment, individually or with the assistance of other staff members. EProvide community-based instruction, social skills, and life skills training with individual or small groups of students in a variety of settings such as purchasing items at a store, job coaching, independent bus travel, and pedestrian safety. EAccompany, assist and monitor students in a variety of non-classroom activities and locations including field trips, buses, job sites, community settings, cafeterias, bus lines, and on-campus events. EPerform a variety of classroom associated clerical work such as sorting, filing, record-keeping, completing forms and applications, collecting monies, measuring, cutting, and duplicating materials. EAssist in classroom organizing activities such as displaying educational materials, preparing bulletin boards and teaching aids, and arranging furniture to facilitate instructional needs; replenish supplies and materials for classroom use. EAssist students utilizing assistive technology devices and related equipment and software associated with computer-assisted instruction and oral language facilitation; operate, monitor and troubleshoot assistive technology equipment. EOperate a variety of classroom, audio-visual and office equipment including a copier, laminator, calculator, and a computer and assigned software. EAttend and participate in meetings, workshops, and training programs. EAdminister basic first aid or necessary physical assistance to ill, injured or distressed students. EMay administer prescribed medication in emergency situations in accordance with District procedures.May call parents to arrange appointments and provide approved information about school activities or students under the direction of certificated staff; participate in parent conferences as requested.May utilize basic sign language gestures and techniques in some assignments.Perform related duties as assigned.Note: There is an italicized E at the end of some of the duty statements which identifies essential duties required of the classification. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Positions in the Instructional Aide – Special, BL Spanish classification require the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in Spanish. Candidates must successfully pass the District's bilingual/biliterate test. Some assignments will require successful completion of District-provided CPR/First Aid training. Some assignments will require successful completion of District-provided training to perform physical health care treatments to meet student needs. After an employee in this class has been provided initial training to work with students with physical health care needs and feels the need for additional training, they may request it.
