Position Summary:
The Camp Nurses are the primary health care providers for campers with developmental or physical disabilities ages 10 and up as well as staff members at camp for each session. The Camp Nurse is the responsible party in charge of all health-related camp emergencies.
Contract Dates:
June – August, possibility of as-needed year-round depending on experience.
Hours of Work:
Part-time Camp nurses work scheduled shifts 6am - 1pm or 3pm – 10pm. Shifts may vary by week and be schedule Sun-Sat depending on camp session schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide assistance to Head Nurse as requested
- Responds to all emergency health situations or injuries in camp.
- Monitors health of campers and staff for illness and treats or refers.
- Maintains separate daily logs of camper and staff visits, care, and treatment.
- Reviews health history of campers and staff and maintains records in confidential files
- Follows orders and health care plans provided by physicians.
- Dispenses and administers all medications.
- Performs camper arrival/departure health checks and reviews, including discussions with parents or caregivers
- Checks in, logs and storages all medications required for campers
- Responsible for clean, safe, and orderly condition of the infirmary; maintains inventory of health supplies and orders supplies as necessary.
- When necessary, isolates a camper or staff in the infirmary/other designated location and supervises their care for up to twenty-four hours at which point the camper returns to activities or is sent home.
- Works as part of the camp team to ensure campers have a safe, positive experience. Maintains positive work relationships and communicates issues with the camp director promptly.
- Provides bathing, transport and toileting as necessary.
- Provides training to camp staff on the needs of campers.
- Assures that Easterseals Safety Program and security procedures are carefully observed to reduce work-related injuries.
- Determines and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: *
Education/Experience:
Experience working with people with disabilities is beneficial but not required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Registered Nurse certification or LVN/LPN certification in the state of California. Must be currently licensed to work in California. Must have Department of Justice or FBI fingerprint clearance and/or a clear criminal background check as arranged by Easter Seals Central California.
Language Skills:
Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, with campers, staff, parents and caregivers and the general public. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, medical orders, prescriptions or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and records. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from campers, staff, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to make medical calculations involving medication dosages and medical measurements. Ability to convert American measurement units.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Computer/Technology Skills:
Must be computer literate on the PC, including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Other Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: *
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have verbal communication and attentive listening skills. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: *
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
