The Intermediate Special Care Unit (ISCU) is an 8-bed progressive care unit that cares primarily for surgical patients in the areas of Trauma, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, ENT, Cancer, and Renal Transplant. As a unit that serves a primarily surgical patient population, it is a fast-paced environment that provides its nurses with an outstanding opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of complex surgical patients. In addition, we are the only unit that takes solid organ kidney transplants post-op day 0, which provides an incredible learning opportunity for nurses. In addition, the small care area allows staff to build relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team. As a unit dedicated to practice improvement, working through challenging and complex situations, and providing at-the-elbow education when necessary, a nurse who will be successful here is one that can adapt quickly, resource when necessary, and is wanting of a diverse patient population.
The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is a unique place for nurses. We are one of the few locations throughout the United States that can offer nurses some of the most diverse, sophisticated, and rewarding nursing careers, but we can also claim an outstanding quality of life with a lifestyle, compensation, and total lifestyle benefits package built around your personal and professional success.
