Job Statement: Provides technical expertise, knowledge, and experience to the Engineering Department. Handles complex work assignments and provides technical guidance and instruction to junior engineers and aides. Establishes and maintains system specifications, evaluates new products, and makes recommendations to management regarding system improvements. Persons in this position will be considered a subject matter expert in their field.
Essential Duties:
- Provides technical guidance and expertise to department personnel. Reviews technical documents prepared by department to verify that information is correct and applicable.
- Prepares feasibility studies, prepares preliminary design reports, cost estimates, and makes forecasts of system requirements based on consumer demand projections, service area growth trends, and interpretation of modeling data.
- Reviews plans and specifications to ensure that they are technically complete and developed within policies, procedures, industry standard, and applicable codes.
- Performs constructability reviews to verify that project can be constructed and maintained as designed. Makes recommendations to correct any constructability or maintenance deficiencies identified.
- Reviews construction shop drawings to verify that proposed materials meet project specifications. Perform periodic field visits to verify that approved materials are being used and installed correctly according to project plans and specifications.
- Consults with other departments to regarding projects and processes to ensure that project impacts and required resources are addressed.
- Stays abreast of current and proposed industry standards and codes. Maintains and updates HU standards and specifications to insure that they are in compliance with current industry standards and codes.
- Prepares and reviews project budgets and justifications.
- Handles difficult or complex customer and technical problems that are beyond the capabilities of less experienced personnel in the department.
- Maintains positive relationships with City, County and State entities.
- Stays abreast of latest trends and developments in the industry; Evaluates new products and makes recommendations for use.
- Responds to emergency call-outs as required. Participates in managing large restoration efforts as needed.
- Provides direction and assistance in determining restoration actions and priorities during emergency situations.
- Promotes and enforces compliance with all safety practices and policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education/Certifications/Training: B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited school and current AL Professional Engineering License or the ability to successfully obtain licensure by comity with six months of hire.
Experience/Skills: A minimum of ten (10) years of practical experience is required. Expertise of design, construction standards, and codes for distribution and transmission systems, previous engineering and construction experience, knowledge of materials and equipment used in operating and maintaining the systems, and experience with system model planning. Experience with integrated business, design, mapping systems required.
Equipment: Vehicle, computer, software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, Bentley, Mapping/GIS software, etc), two-way radio, telephone and calculator.
Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Sedentary work in office environment. Sometimes required to work long periods of time in inclement weather while coordinating activities to mitigate severe storm damage.
Other: A team player with excellent interpersonal, speaking and writing skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and positively with others at all levels within the company and outside the company. Good technical knowledge and teaching skills. Subject to recall. Current Alabama driver’s license. Subject to On-Call Duty.

Other Considerations:
Distributed Energy Resource (DER) and Service Installations:
- Applies power engineering theory and concepts to the implementation of DER projects. Reviews proposed projects for conformity to HU standards, and other applicable industry standards (IEEE, and others). Knowledge of equipment, testing, maintenance, and commissioning is desired.
- Makes impact studies by analyzing system performance, both present and projected, using load forecasts, load flow studies, short circuit studies, conductor and device loading studies, voltage profile studies, coordination studies and other analyses as required. Based on study results, uses sound engineering judgment and economics to make recommendations.
- Maintains customer facing and internal process documents related to DER connections. Works with customers to facilitate DER projects.
- Reviews and evaluates exiting DER installations for efficiency and ROI.
- Knowledge of and NESC compliance, IEEE 1547, and other industry requirements and Synergi Electric modeling software desired. Very familiar with NEMA, ANSI, and NESC in all aspects for electric systems.
- Current AL Professional Engineering license or the ability to successfully obtain licensure by comity with six.
