We are a multispecialty surgical center looking for a full time Pre-Op nurse. Day shift position with hours varying from day to day.
POSITION SUMMARY
As the Registered Nurse Pre-Op you will work to ensure that the surgery center’s patients receive excellent care. You will provide a wide variety of support to the clinical staff as needed. This will include assessing health history, EKG rhythms and IV insertions. The Pre-Op Registered Nurse is required to collect, interpret, record and communicate pertinent data that is relevant to the patient’s care appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Data is concurrently assessed for optimum patient care.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Pre-op RN is directly accountable to the Director of Nursing, works collaboratively with nursing colleagues, medical and anesthesia staff, Surgical Techs and the Front Desk staff. Delegates responsibility to non-professional staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Current RN state licensure
2. Minimum of 1 years of recent post-anesthesia, critical care or recovery care experience
3. Current BCLS and ACLS certification required
4. Current PALS or obtained within six months of hire
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The Pre-op RN must be able to engage in physical activities on a daily basis. As a direct patient care provider, the Pre-op RN will maintain:
1. The Pre-op Nurse must be able to engage in physical activities, including: lifting, turning or supporting an adult patient with the appropriate number of personnel and/or devices; bending and stretching, and lifting up to 20 pounds of inert medical supplies and equipment
2. The Pre-op Nurse must be physically able to perform CPR.
3. As a direct patient care provider, the Pre-op Nurse will maintain:
a. Hepatitis immunization (will be provided at no cost to the employee) or documented refusal to be vaccinated
b. Evidence of negative TB or chest x-ray.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assessment: The Pre-op RN is accountable for the pre-operative preparation, care and education of the patient. The Pre-op RN is required to collect, interpret, record and communicate pertinent data that is relevant to the patient’s care appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Data is concurrently assessed for optimum patient care and planned discharge of the patient. Assessment shall include:
A. Verification of the patient’s pre-operative vital signs, ekg and general conditions
B. Verification of the operative procedure, site, surgeon, and anesthesiologist
C. Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with resource persons. (surgeon, anesthesia provider, peri-operative RN and SSC ancillary personnel)
D. Uses data collected to formulate nursing diagnosis about the health status and needs of the patient
E. Revises plan of care, as needed, to accommodate patient’s recovery based on continuing assessment of the patient
F. Conveys the plan of care to other members of the surgical team
2. Planning:
A. Utilizes data collected to plan for postop nursing care appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
B. Follows the standards of care for preop and postop nursing care, along with the preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists, when planning care
C. Monitors the necessary equipment and supplies for the preop area and Phase II recovery; equipment is checked and found to be in good working order
D. Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults, as necessary, with resource person (physicians, anesthesiologists, and other SSC team members)
E. Uses data collected to formulate nursing diagnosis about the health status and needs of the patient
F. Revises plan of care as needed based on continuing assessment of the patient
G. Conveys the plan of care to other members of the SSC team.
3. Implementation:
A. Provides direct care to patients appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, meeting their physical and psychological needs
B. Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly
C. Provides emotional support and comfort measures
D. Gives information or explanation to patients and their families as warranted
E. Ensures and respects the patient’s rights, privacy and dignity
F. Applies and monitor the principles of aseptic technique throughout the pre-operative phase
G. Starts new IV's and maintains the intravenous infusion, records and delivers amount of solutions as ordered
H. Administers medications and oxygen, as needed; documents all administration
I. Recognizes symptoms of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and/or other impending crisis; initiates emergency response
J. Participates in the evaluation of new supplies and equipment
K. Coordinates the activities of other health care professionals and ancillary staff in assisting the patient for discharge
L. Instructs the patient in self-care and in-home treatment of post-operative symptomology
M. Documents all pre-operative care
N. Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrence noted during the pre-operative phase
O. Properly care for and disinfects equipment and furniture in the recovery areas
P. Reports and labels out-of-service equipment malfunction and documents return to service of equipment
4.Evaluation:
A. Evaluates the patient’s response to nursing interventions and modifies the nursing care plan to achieve to desired outcome
B. Collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient care plan according to the changing needs of the patient appropriate to pediatrics, adolescent, adults and geriatric patients
