As the largest academic unit on the UC Merced campus, the Merritt Writing Program (MWP) has a range of faculty expertise, including creative writing, professional and technical writing, literacy studies, multimodal composition, rhetorical theory, writing pedagogy and assessment, and writing program administration.
The MWP offers an array of courses in which students explore the art of critical thinking, craft their written expression, and address a variety of local and global issues and audiences. Our students learn to use language actively, inventively, and responsibly by exchanging their work at all stages of their writing process. MWP appointments include required composition general education courses as well as the opportunity to teach other lower and upper division courses. Our interdisciplinary approach to writing offers students the opportunity to reflect broadly on their college education as well as to consider a range of pre-professional and academic opportunities.
Full-time MWP lecturers will teach a total of five courses annually with section enrollment capped at 22 students for most courses. Part-time lectures will teach 1-4 courses over the academic year.
The Merritt Writing Program seeks to hire full and part-time experienced teachers of writing in the areas of first-year composition, professional & technical writing, and/or writing in the disciplines (Psychology and Public Health). Of particular interest are candidates with experience working in Hispanic (HSI), Minority (MSI), and/or Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) serving institutions.
