POSITION OVERVIEW:
Surgicorps’ mission is to provide free surgical and medical care to people in need in developing countries. The Surgicorps International Board of Directors is seeking a part-time Executive Director who will report to the Board and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of our mission, including management of the office team, management of finances, and fundraising growth.
The Executive Director will be responsible for the delivery of efficient and high-quality services within a financial framework established by the Board. Strong management and interpersonal skills are expected, in order to maximize the organization’s positive impact and manage a growing volunteer and donor base. We seek a hands-on leader that can be innovative and adaptable, and will create partnerships (donors, volunteers, organizations) that will further our mission. The Executive Director must have a demonstrated ability to effectively lead individuals and teams.
EXPECTATIONS:
Leadership and Management
· Provides the leadership to ensure that the organization effectively achieves its mission. This includes day-to-day operations, fiscal management, fundraising, management of office staff, and working with the medical director on program trip development and expansion.
· Develops a strategic plan in cooperation with the Board, and effectively implements annual operating plans.
· Manages the organization’s financial position. Creates, implements, and monitors the budgetary process.
· Continually evaluates the organization’s performance with special emphasis on fundraising and community engagement. Seeks out and responds to areas needing improvement.
· Demonstrates flexibility to meet changing needs of both the organization and developing areas around the world.
· Follows all applicable federal and state regulations, including compliance and employment regulations. Creates and/or complies with all Surgicorps policies and procedures.
· Facilitates healthy communication between internal and external stakeholders of the organization: board, staff, volunteers, contractors, and the public at large.
Fundraising and Community Relations
· Develops, implements and oversees all fundraising activity of the organization, in cooperation with the Board and staff. Participates in setting fundraising objectives and leads accomplishment of those objectives.
· Has personal responsibility for cultivating and maintaining relationships with the organization’s key individual and institutional donors.
· Maintains effective and productive relationships with the community at large.
· Oversees at minimum one large in-person fundraiser per year, barring external circumstances (e.g. COVID). This will occur in coordination with an annual in-person Board of Directors meeting and performance review.
Board and External Relations
· Collaborates with Board to promote governance best practices that support fiduciary responsibilities and strategic goals
· Supports the work of the Board and maximizes the contributions of new and existing board members.
· Communicates appropriate, timely, and complete information to the Board for review.
· Through the Board’s committee structure, provides guidance, authorization, and feedback when carrying out major plans, consistent with established policies and Board approval.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):
· Bachelor’s degree required. Relevant Master’s degree strongly preferred.
· Residence in Pittsburgh or vicinity. A consistent presence at the Surgicorps headquarters is required.
· A demonstrated passion for international service; prior volunteer or paid international experience desired. Experience with the medical field preferred.
· Substantial and successful experience as a leader within an organization similar in size, scope, and scale of impact, including experience working with a Board of Directors.
· Strong financial acumen.
· A demonstrable history of leading positive organizational change in prior jobs or volunteer positions.
· Experience developing, and implementing fundraisers within an established organization
· Quantifiable experience in cultivating, soliciting and receiving support from diverse audiences.
· Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
· Prior experience with formal management of a team.
· An ethical, hands-on, involved approach to work and leadership.
· Technical proficiency and self-sufficiency with standard workplace software tools and preferably experienced with both non-profit specific software suites and social media toolsets. (e.g. EveryAction)
