Job Summary:
The Director of Museum Exhibitions is responsible for organizing and coordinating all aspects of Selby Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota and Historic Spanish Point campus exhibition programs. Responsibilities include securing art loans, arranging courier service details, managing art insurance inquiries and agreements as well as exhibition calendars and installation schedules.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
● Under the supervision of the Vice President for Visitor Engagement and Chief Museum Curator, coordinates the conception, selection, development, installation, and organization of exhibitions
● Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization and that they comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards
● Schedule exhibitions - maintain and distribute calendars as well as update all exhibition related content on internal calendars
● Oversees the work of contract art handlers and fabricators
● Liaises with artists, lenders, designers, etc.
● Liaises with contacts from the Smithsonian Institution (Smithsonian Affiliates Program)
● Coordinate the production of wall text, labels and other exhibition-related signage
● Maintain and organize digital and print files as well as all exhibition related records
● Tracks exhibition-related expenses
● Provide necessary files for exhibition-related programming for marketing and promotion
● Supervises the Gallery Manager
● Other duties as assigned
Education and experience
● Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, education, biology, or Horticulture required. Master’s Degree in museum related field preferred
● Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a museum, botanical gardens, nature center or arboretum, setting and preferably in an exhibition-related role
● Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered
Qualifications
● Working knowledge of G-Suite and Microsoft 365
● Familiarity with Blackbaud and Volgistics software preferred
● Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, staff, volunteers and the public
● Must have the ability to take information and effectively package/present it in a way that is accessible to diverse audiences
● Superb attention to detail is essential, as are planning skills, and the ability to be an effective and collaborative team member in a museum environment
