Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for the strategic, operational and budgetary performance of the Nursing Administration and Care delivery, encompassing nursing administration and patient care-functions, including Medical/Surgical/Pediatric inpatient units, Emergency Room, Critical Care, Maternity, Respiratory Care, Nursing Education, Perioperative Services, Operating Rooms, PACU, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Cardiac Cath Lab, Psychiatric services, Case Management and Social Work. The CNO will lead the strategic development of an integrated nursing practice ensuring the highest levels of clinical quality and patient satisfaction and safety, as well as planning, implementing and evaluating services in accordance with established objectives and professional standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages all aspects of hospital nursing operations.
- Establishes and achieves goals and objectives for clinical departments consistent with hospital goals, mission and Board Priorities.
- Identifies and develops new business opportunities that support the Hospital Mission and respond to competitive threats.
- Develops and maintains a productive working relationship amongst various physician chiefs and administrative directors consistent with Hospital objectives and priorities.
- Manages administrative staff and ensures physician leadership commitment to common goals.
- Directs or participates in the negotiation of all healthcare delivery contracts relative to areas of responsibility.
- Determines operational and resource requirements for new services. Evaluates financial feasibility.
- Evaluates current profitability by service and payor to assist senior management in identifying opportunities to maximize net revenue.
- Coordinates with MIS to develop and implement systems to monitor managed care performance.
- Institutes review process as required to maximize net revenue based upon specific third party requirements.
- Develops and ensures compliance with appropriate standards and policies related to operations and practice.
- Establishes acceptable staffing patterns consistent with patient care needs and efficient operations.
- Manages staff according to related hospital policies.
- Oversees selection, development, corrective action of staff directly and through directors/managers.
- Prepares and submits an annual operating and capital budget for all areas in conjunction with directors/managers and physicians.
- Ensures that departmental activities and optimal patient care are provided within the approved budget allotted.
- Oversees departmental quality assurance activities.
- Ensures that regulatory and licensure standards are met.
- Keeps the President, Chief Executive Officer informed on conditions in areas of responsibility.
- Participates in strategic planning in concert with the organizations goals that contribute toward market growth, revenue enhancement, cost containment and maximizing productivity.
- Interprets and effectively implements all administrative policies and procedures.
- Develops program objectives and strategies for implementation which focus on the improvement of processes of care and services which effect patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Represents departments/division at public forums.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variable within established policies and protocols. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to assign and delegate duties in a clear and understandable manner.
- Must be able to reasonable make appropriate judgement in communication and actions with patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies and vendors.
- Manages budgets, establishes decision making framework for all functions, and reviews all programs and policies for all areas of responsibility.
- Functions independently within broad scope of hospital policies and regulatory guidelines. Establishes policies and procedures for areas of responsibility. Participates in development of hospital policies, strategic and business plan for hospital.
- Directly manages Associate VP of Nursing, & Several Directors. Through these direct reports, manages staff in all areas on responsibility. Takes rotating assignment as Administrator-On-Call.
Education/Experience and License:
- Education: Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration or similar. Equivalent experience may be considered. RN, BS, and M.S. Master’s Degree in Nursing or related filed and at least five years’ experience in an executive nursing role.
- Experience: Extensive experience in healthcare management (10+ years). Thorough working knowledge of hospital operations as they relate to the clinical areas from an administrative perspective. Sound business judgement, demonstrated communication and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with physician leadership to achieve common goals. Broad knowledge of nursing practice, policies and regulation requirement in an acute setting. Strong communication, negotiation presentation and effective management skills.
- Certification/Licensure: Licensed to practice professional nursing in Massachusetts.
