Summary
The R&D Machinist solves problems relative to materials, tools, work-holding arrangements, machine settings (speeds and feeds) product specifications, and fabrication methods for production processes. In addition to consulting with engineers and other personnel regarding product information (such as design, capacity, purpose, grades of material and methods to be used to fabricate product), this role applies knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, material properties, layouts, and machining procedures to achieve desired results.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations
Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
Reviews customer requirements, creates drawings or redraw customer drawings using Solid Works when required
Participates as a team member to evaluate returned customer products to recommend design or manufacturing method improvements
Sets up machine tools (conventional and/or CNC) lathe, milling machine, or grinder to machine parts to specifications
Fits and assembles parts to fabricate tools, mechanisms, and machines for development of prototypes
Selects material stock and lays out designs according to dimensions computed from drawings
Verifies conformance of parts to specifications, using measuring instruments
Evaluates experimental procedures and recommends changes and/or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup and production, and tests experimental models for such parts as development, standardization, and feasibility of design
Establishes procedures for fabricating new products using a variety of machines if necessary
Trains workers in setup and operation of machine tools if necessary
Leads efforts of assessing and dispositioning of 5S items
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Education/Experience
2-year associate degree from a technical school in Machine Shop Technology and/or 5+ years’ documented machining experience on multiple machines, lathes, and mills
Some CNC programming experience is a plus
Machine application experience required including tooling, fixturing, speeds, feeds, etc.
Basic computer skills including Windows-based applications such as Microsoft Office
Must be able to prioritize functions, be free-thinking and see each job to completion
Must function as a driving force within the company for developing technology, sparking innovative ideas and methods, and demonstrating commitment to customers
Must be able to work and communicate within an environment of coordination and cooperation
Must be able to have frequent contact with machine shop personnel, engineering, sales, programming, processing, management, and customers as required
Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical drawings and customer specification
Must be able to be frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and machinery
Must be able to be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals though all necessary PPE is provided
Must be able to be exposed to noise levels that are generally moderate (the office area is quiet, and some areas of the machine shop can be loud)
Must be able to be exposed to non-toxic graphite dust, which is classified as a nuisance dust
Ability to occasionally lift up to 35 pounds
Steel- or composite-toe boots, protective eyewear is required when on the shop floor

Pay: $30.00 - $36.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 42 per week
