Job Title: Legal Counsel - Policy and Legal

The Missouri School Boards’ Association, a nonprofit membership organization of public school governing bodies, seeks a Legal Counsel. This is an in-house, on-site position in Columbia.

The incumbent will join a team of attorneys who instruct and advise MSBA constituents on legal and public policy issues, with an ability to communicate to variety of levels of audience expertise and capacity. The attorneys at MSBA create and update topical published products as necessitated by changes in governing law; prepare and present live and video presentations and training to members; support MSBA’s Policy, Advocacy, and Leadership Development departments and MSBA programs/services as assigned; respond to member inquiries; participate in national work-alike programs with colleagues; and contribute to a collaborative approach to supporting our members. MSBA writes and files a small number of amicus briefs each year.
Applicants must have a Missouri Bar license in good standing or be expecting admission before the end of 2024. Public schools have an incredible web of legal relationships, obligations, and powers to manage. Therefore, all levels and types of applicants' relevant personal and legal experience are eligible for consideration as suitable for a role built upon these functions. As a team with a wide variety of functions to perform, we are able to work collaboratively with new colleagues to assign tasks that take advantage of your strengths and help you develop your practice knowledge and skills in the public education space. Because of the collaborative approach to serving our members, the many cross-departmental projects involved, and to best serve members making inquiries of us, this position in based on-site in our Columbia office.
