Position Summary:
- The primary purpose of the Logistics Supply Technician position is to ensure the efficient distribution of supplies and materials to all areas serviced by Logistics at the Phoenix Arizona VAMC facility. The role involves providing wards, clinics, operating rooms, secondary storage locations, and other hospital facilities with a wide range of supplies, including sterile and non-sterile medical supplies, instrument sets, and equipment. The Logistics Supply Technician is responsible for various tasks, such as scanning, bar coding, receiving, storing, and distributing medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and other materials. This position requires knowledge of applicable policies and procedures, as well as inventory systems such as the generic inventory package (GIP), bar-coding, aseptic procedures, and Logistics processes.
Work Schedule:
Contract technician(s) shall be available Monday through Sundays from 0600-1430, 0700-1530, 1200-2030, and 1500-2330. Personnel may rotate shifts as needed. The shifts are as follows: Mon-Fri 0600-1430, 1200- 2030, and 1500-2330, Saturday-Sunday 0600-1430 and 0700-1530, including Federal Holidays.
Responsibilities and Skills Required:
Supply Distribution (70 percent)
- Maintain stock levels at primary and secondary inventory locations for all clinical and administrative services.
- Pull stock inventory and materials from the main inventory for delivery and replenish stock inventory as needed.
- Interact with clinical and administrative customers to address issues and needs, escalating unresolved matters to supervisors or Inventory Management Specialists.
- Maintain records on stock levels and recommend revisions as needed.
- Communicate concerns related to supplies, equipment, and procedures to the lead or supervisor, providing information orally or in writing.
- Communicate with customers and vendors to obtain information regarding medical supplies.
- Monitor expiration dates, rotate stock to limit outdates, and remove items from use as required.
- Perform a daily inventory of primary and secondary inventory points using bar coding equipment or physical hand count.
- Identify stock discrepancies and collaborate with Inventory Management Specialists to resolve differences between records and physical count.
- Distribute items according to established or ad hoc requirements.
- Utilize pager or similar devices to expedite pick-up and delivery of items needed in user areas.
- Deliver supplies in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring they are in sterile and operational condition.
- Prepare and stock speciality carts for safe and efficient transport.
- Clean assigned secondary areas in accordance with aseptic principles and infection control guidelines.
- Support wall-to-wall and periodic inventories, noting and reporting discrepancies for management action.
- Assist in other functional areas of the section as needed.
Inventory Control – Receiving (30 Percent)
- Receive supplies and materials into the VA Health Care System and supported catchment area.
- Unpack and properly store supplies and materials in main/primary inventory areas.
- Utilize inventory management systems (e.g., Omni Cell, Censitrac) to ensure sterility, integrity, and data accuracy.
- Maintain stock levels through periodic inventory and discussions with ward and clinical personnel.
- Return reusable supplies to the distribution area and inform clinic and ward personnel about new or changed items, current resources, and shelf life.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
- Practical knowledge of standard supply management procedures and inventory management.
- Ability to interpret policies, procedures, manuals, and regulations related to supply/inventory management and federal acquisition systems.
- Knowledge of stock rotation, hazard alerts, and recalls to ensure the removal of outdated or compromised supplies.
- Familiarity with automated inventory systems and the ability to monitor issues and receipts for stock replenishment processes.
- Analytical skills to define and recognize problems, collect data, and make recommendations for solutions.
- Proficiency in using computers and Microsoft Office software programs, such as Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, item descriptions, and recognized priorities of the clinical areas served.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to interact with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
