Job Summary and Essential Function
Performs nursing assessment for pre-procedural and pre-surgical patients either telephonic or in person. Provides patient, family / support person education. Assists Preoperative Medical Evaluation Center physician and anesthesia provider in coordination of care.

Job Function 01: Utilizes nursing assessment skills effectively: Using the nursing process following standard of care for professional nurses. Conducts telephonic nursing assessment and patient education for surgical and endoscopy services. Nursing assessment includes review of medical and surgical history, medications and allergies, social history and screening for sleep apnea. Performs clinical chart review and communicates finding to patient care team in a timely manner. Participates in Clinical Daily Review (CDR) Huddle for surgical patients as needed.
Job Function 02: Consistently demonstrates competent clinical skills: Performs direct and indirect patient care activities in support of patient care delivery and team concept. Consistently provides competent and appropriate nursing care to age specific populations. Completes nursing assessment in a timely manner and documents accordingly. Critically analyzes situations and makes effective decisions which reflect the integration of nursing knowledge and clinical practice guidelines. Takes decisive actions to ensure safe, quality, efficient and compassionate nursing care. Effectively communicates and updates physician and advanced level practitioner in a timely manner. Effectively communicates to patients.
Job Function 03 : Maintains complete and accurate documentation: Documents in accordance with professional nursing standards and facility policies. Assumes responsibility for documenting clinical concerns and notification to patient care team in a timely manner.
Job Function 04 : Demonstrates ability to multi-task, prioritize care, and problem solve to meet the changing needs of the individual patient, family/significant other, staffing and unit needs. Demonstrates competency and knowledge of policies and procedures. Functions as a team member, resource/ mentor and provides support to staff members to resolve patient care and staff concerns/ issues. Engages in professional development. Keeps current with changes to unit functions and activities.
Job Function 05 : Follows hospital and departmental policies and protocols to facilitate patients’ encounters. Coordinates interdepartmental test/ procedures to ensure efficient care.
Job Function 06: Consistently responds to patients/ families in a courteous and positive manner while maintaining cultural awareness. Consistently respects the patients’ right to privacy, dignity, and ensures confidentiality according to HIPAA (health insurance portability and accountability) guidelines. Identifies patient/family needs and communicates them to appropriate resources.
Job Function 07: Adheres to OSHA, JCAHO national patient safety goals, Board of Health, and hospital standards and requirements. Participates in yearly validations of department skills. Maintains clean and safe environment for patients and staff in accordance with hospital policies and other regulatory agencies. Checks for patient identification prior to any intervention. Exhibits PRIDE values on a daily basis. Demonstrates use of safe transfer techniques and proper body mechanics for self, staff, and patients. Utilizes universal precautions including handwashing and proper isolation techniques.
Job Function 8: Maintains unit specific job requirements: Maintains current RN (Registered Nurse) license, current certifications (BLS) as per state mandate with no lapse in licensure or certification. Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings and departmental training as required.
Job Function 9: Professionalism: Seeks individual growth and professional development. Implements evidence based best practices in everyday patient care. Attending professional job-related educational conferences, advances educational degree, supports the need for and stimulates interest in the research process to improve PAT practices. Encouraged membership in professional nursing organizations PACT, and RN Certification.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Requirements
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred a minimum of completion of Associates Degree in Nursing Required
Experience: Clinical experience in surgical services or related service line.
Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations
Certificates: BLS, RN certification preferred
Licenses: State of NJ RN License

Must be able to push/pull/lift up to 35lbs. Must be able to tolerate long periods of standing and /or walking.
