Department: Sterile Processing Department (SPD) - Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Reports To: ASC Administrator/Director of Nursing
Job Summary: The SPD Manager oversees the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) in an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role is responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe, and compliant decontamination, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment. The SPD Manager leads the SPD team, manages resources, and ensures adherence to regulatory standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Department Management:
- Oversee and manage the daily operations of the SPD, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution processes.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and compliant SPD operations.
- Team Leadership:
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate SPD staff.
- Provide ongoing education and training to ensure staff competency and adherence to best practices.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Quality Control and Compliance:
- Ensure all sterilization processes meet regulatory standards, including those set by Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
- Conduct routine audits, quality assurance checks, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and inventory.
- Resource Management:
- Manage the inventory of sterile processing supplies and equipment.
- Ensure timely ordering, stocking, and availability of necessary supplies.
- Prepare and manage the SPD budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Coordinate with surgical teams, OR staff, and other departments to ensure the timely and accurate availability of sterile instruments and equipment.
- Communicate effectively with ASC leadership regarding departmental needs, issues, and improvements.
- Serve as a liaison between the SPD and other departments, facilitating effective communication and cooperation.
- Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement changes to enhance efficiency, safety, and quality.
- Stay current with industry advancements, best practices, and technological innovations in sterile processing.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred; Associate’s degree with relevant experience may be considered.
- Certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) required. Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or other leadership certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in sterile processing, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably in an ASC or hospital setting.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in using sterile processing equipment and computer systems.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily in a sterile processing area within an ASC.
- Requires standing for long periods, repetitive motions, and handling of delicate instruments.
- Exposure to chemicals, cleaning agents, and potentially infectious materials, with adherence to safety protocols required.
