HEP Urban Empowerment Garden
Title: Garden Assistant (Part Time 20 Hours/Week)
Reports to: Director of Programs
Department: Wellness Program
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Urban Empowerment Garden Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Garden Specialist with daily duties in the HEP Urban Empowerment, Vertical Garden and Mobile Market while maintaining fidelity with funders and HEP’s mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Urban Empowerment Garden Assistant performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following:
· Supporting the garden program and its activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization
· Follow crop plans for each garden plot based on current needs from the Garden Coordinator, HEP Kitchen Manager, CSA participants, and SNAP Marketplace.
· Performing general landscape and garden maintenance-debris removal, lawn care, weeding, and pest control
· Plant, harvest, and maintain both edible and landscape plants
· Turn compost pile according to set policies and procedures
· Work closely with Garden Coordinator, other HEP staff, HEP residents and volunteers for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices.
· Follow set policies, procedures, and approved budget as director by the Director of Programs
· Comply with funding agreements
· Maintain standard operating procedures for good agricultural practices to ensure best management for food safety
· Communicate with participants and other stakeholders to gain community support for the program and to solicit input to improve and grow program.
· Participate in off-site training, conferences, markets and community programs
· Complete any necessary duties as indicated by the Director of Programs
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· AA or AS degree minimum/ gardening certificate or equivalent experience
· Urban Garden/CSA experience a must
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Great interpersonal and relationship building skills
· Problem-solving and decision making skills
· Ability to pull trailer and safe driving record.
· Positively influence/model for others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization and program.
· Excellent organizational skills
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
· Up to 100% of the shift requires sitting, standing, bending, reaching, lifting and long periods of time on feet
· The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in heat, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions
