Nurse Resident - Menninger Clinic Nurse Residency Program
The Nurse Resident is a registered nurse engaged in a three-month mentor-based program designed to transition the new graduate nurse into professional practice. The mentor for the internship is an experienced highly skilled registered nurse who supports the resident to achieve skills and knowledge to function as a Staff Nurse. By the end of the residency period, the Nurse Resident is responsible for coordinating total nursing care for patients, and participating in the education of patients and family regarding issues relevant to nursing. The Nurse Resident is also responsible for maintaining the standards for professional nursing practice in a clinical setting by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing staff and other clinical staff.
Key Functions
1. Patient care
Assessment and care planning –
o Sets appropriate goals; including the physical, psychological, social, and continuing care needs of each patient; evaluates nursing actions to meet those goals; and makes recommendations for any changes.
o Demonstrates effective bio-psycho-social assessment skills
o Develops comprehensive nursing care plans based on nursing diagnosis and standards of care, clearly written with expected outcomes
o Effectively utilizes nursing process in directing and providing patient care
o Modifies plan of care based on ongoing patient assessment
o Insures effective health teaching for patients and families
o Insures comprehensive discharge planning relative to nursing care needs
Effective member of interdisciplinary team
o Observes, documents and communicates patient responses and effectiveness of nursing intervention and medication; documents in patient’s medical record according to established policy and procedure
o Insures safety by making patient and safety rounds according to policy, regularly assessing physical environments, and follow-up for identified concerns
o Seeks constructive feedback from co-workers regarding performance, interpersonal relations, nursing skills and abilities; recognizes limitations through self-appraisal and peer review. Effectively utilizes management and clinical supervision
o Supports and encourages constructive working relationship with program and other disciplines / departments while valuing opposing ideas
o Responds to patients, staff and visitors in professional manner
o Demonstrates good judgment and behavior appropriate to the hospital, including such characteristics as grooming and personal appearance, speech, and personal hygiene
o Participates in performance improvement activities
o Relieves charge nurse in his / her absence as assigned
Provision of nursing interventions
o Demonstrates knowledge of medication action, mode of administration, side effects and contraindications by successfully completing annual medication examination.
o Provides safe and timely administration of medication and prescribed treatments, insuring prompt reporting of all errors
o Effectively engages patients in full participation of treatment program
2. Hospital operations
o Seeks opportunities to participate in hospital committees, performance improvement initiatives, and activities
o Participates in orientation and training of students and new staff
Education Required: Completion of a NLN or CCNE accredited RN program. BSN required. Graduate of BSN program within last 12 months.
License/Certification: Current permit to practice as GN at time of hire and license to practice as RN in state of Texas within 6 weeks of hire.
Experience: No experience required.
