SUMMARY
Inspects and tests printed and laminated samples of materials to verify conformance to prescribed standards and specifications and to assist production personnel in solving quality control problems.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Obtains printed sample of flexible packaging material from Press Operator and performs tests and checks as follows:
- Examines general appearance of print (color, coverage, registration) and uses tape to check ink adhesion.
- Measures package dimensions (set-up and first roll samples only).
- Uses opacity machine to gauge light transmission properties and checks UPC code with laser scanner to insure accuracy/legibility.
- Operates gas chromatograph to detect presence of and identify retained solvents in packaging materials.
- Compares results of tests to figures found in structure specifications guide and notifies printing supervisor of findings, issuing “process alert” tickets as required.
- Obtains laminated samples from operator and checks as follows:
- Examines general appearance and checks dimensions for accuracy.
- Uses, on occasion, micrometer to check for gauge bands.
- Weighs, with laboratory balance, strips of film to determine basis weights, thermal strip mass, and adhesive weights, using specifications from production order and basis weights chart for comparison.
- Checks bonds and seals of laminated material using testing puller.
- Sets up and operates gas chromatograph and C.O.F. (coefficient of friction) tester to determine slip ability of package over bag-former machine.
- Uses infrared spectrophotometer to insure EMA distribution.
- Reports any findings not adhering to specifications to Laminating Technician and issues “hold tickets” on defective material.
- Enters test results into computer and obtains print out, filing information as necessary.
- Performs additional tests (hot tack, stiffness, tear resistance, etc.) and material rechecks as needed.
- Checks treat level of films, indicating which side is to be printed or laminated.
- Changes regulators and gauges on laboratory gas cylinders as required.
- Performs customer correlation tests on occasion.
- Keeps lab equipment clean and maintains work areas in neat and orderly fashion.
SKILL, ABILITY, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTIC REQUIREMENTS
- Previous Lab Tester experience.
- Excellent organizational skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School education or G.E.D.
- Ability to read and comprehend production orders.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
