Transit Police Officer - Connecting the Community

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) Police Department ensures a safe and orderly transit environment, fostering public confidence, enhancing system usage, and safeguarding against crime and terrorism. We collaborate with regional partners to respond to and recover from natural and manufactured disasters.
Duties:
- Patrol assigned areas to prevent disorder, criminal activity, and terrorism.
- Protect GCRTA passengers and employees within designated GCRTA areas and municipal jurisdictions.
- Maintain peace and order on railways, buses, stations, platforms, and other GCRTA properties or areas of concurrent jurisdiction.
- Prepare reports and manage responsibilities related to reported information.
- Perform patrol duties specific to the assignment (e.g., bus, radio patrol car, plainclothes, train and station, derailment, etc.).
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. College degree preferred.
- At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment with a valid Ohio driver's license.
- No more than two points on the driver's license in the past three years and no convictions leading to jail time.
- Ability to pass a written test, physical abilities test, and oral communication exercise.
- Satisfactory evaluation in a psychological assessment, medical examination (including drug and alcohol screening), and background check.
- Obtain necessary certifications for systems such as the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) and any required by agencies like the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to interact appropriately with the public in various situations.

Environmental Conditions: This Person will have frequent exposure to inclement weather; possible exposure to hazardous materials and/or infectious blood or other infectious materials; may be exposed to offensive smells, dust, dirt, water, vibrations, and loud continuous noises must be willing to perform all duties described in this job description under adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold and inclement weather.
Physical Demands: This Person will have the possibility of bodily attacks while making an arrest and severe bodily harm while dealing with felons. This person must possess the physical strength and stamina to chase and subdue fleeing persons, arrest them if necessary, and bring them into custody. This person must have the physical strength and stamina to rescue victims; the visual acuity to read and review written correspondence, reports, statistical and technical information, maps, identify suspects, detect danger, read licenses and tags, etc.; the hearing acuity to understand conversation in quiet and noisy environments, communicate clearly and distinctly by telephone and in person, understand radio transmissions. This person must be able to communicate effectively, transmit information via the radio, and talk to victims, suspects, etc. This person must be able to meet established physical and medical requirements including good physical strength and agility; weight must be in proportion to height; must have skill in foot/hand/eye coordination and a high degree of concentration to operate a vehicle, weapon, and other equipment required to fulfill essential job duties; must have the strength to pull, lift, or push 50-pound objects frequently and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. This person must have the flexibility to bend, twist, reach, and the mobility to climb, crawl, and walk, with the stamina to exert oneself throughout the day in all weather conditions.
Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening and evaluating. Ability to give, receive, and analyze information and prepare written materials. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy and procedures. Ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to stressful situations, which may cause the employee to experience feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Must maintain emotional control when under stress. Must be able to work rotating shifts, extended hours, and emergency call-outs. They may be required to attend local or out-of-town conferences, seminars, etc. Must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies at all times.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. This position is also safety-sensitive and subject to random drug testing.

Examinations:
- A battery of tests will be given to eligible candidates. Candidates eligible to take the battery of tests will be notified and provided additional information for test location and registration. The top applicants, based on the test battery, will be scheduled for the Oral Communication Exercises, and other assessments will be scheduled at a later date.
- Salary information while at the Police Academy: $30.00 per hour.
- Salary information after six months: $37.55 per hour.
- Prior Experience: Experience as a law enforcement officer in the State of Ohio preferred
