The Virginia YMCA is a program-based YMCA with a focus on youth civics education to develop the next generation of civics leaders in Virginia. The Chief Executive Office (CEO) position leads our organization with a specific focus on fundraising, revenue growth, and enabling growth through management of the Director of Programming (DoP) and enabling program expansion across the state. The CEO directly manages our YMCA business functions and supervises the Director of Programming (DoP) ensures continued, sustained growth and advancement. General responsibilities include managing and growing both fundraising and revenue streams, managing finances & compliance, reporting to the Board of Directors, and working with external stakeholders. Further, CEO will also supervise the Director of Programming to successfully grow current programming and expand program offerings. Current programming includes Model General Assembly (MGA), Model Judiciary Program (MJP), and Hi-Y/Youth & Government Clubs. Lastly, the CEO will specialize in working with political leaders and stakeholders from around the state to grow our programs influence, ensure important relationships are maintained, and serve as a trusted point of contact with the Virginia YMCA.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- 7+ years of mission-focused non-profit management experience.
- Demonstrated success creating and running fundraising campaigns.
- Working directly with political and corporate leaders to secure funding and access.
- Must be able to speak comfortably in public settings and advocate for the Virginia YMCA and its programs.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to build strong relationships with Volunteers, Advisors, Students, and Staff, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be a quick learner and should be able to work both in teams and alone.
- Must be able to delegate, supervise, and motivate others to achieve the mission and objectives of the YMCA.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook as well as graphic design and basic website and social media is needed.
- Must be available to work some weekends and evenings as well as travel minimum 24 days—often overnight—per year.
- Must be organized and have experience planning both small and large events.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired Skills:
- Chief Executive Office or senior leader of a non-profit with a demonstrated history of success in growing a non-profit organization
- Prior work with civics education and/or youth-focused programs.
- Developing and executing successful fundraising campaigns.
- Knowledge of, and connections with, Virginia’s state government.
- Virginia MGA/Youth & Government alumni.
- Business management experience in accounting, compliance, and governance
Essential Functions:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the company
- Oversee all aspects of business operations and financial management
- Develop and implement business plans and growth strategies
- Supervise the Director of Programming to grow and expand programming with specific annual growth targets for both participation and revenue.
- Develops and manages annual fundraising campaigns with measurable annual growth targets.
- Liaise with elected officials, state leaders, and corporate executives to advocate for the Virginia YMCA and its mission.
- Report to the Board of Directors on finances, fundraising, revenue, and business progress
- Develop a 5-year Strategic Plan in conjunction with the Board of Directors.
- Ensure the Virginia YMCA meets all national, state, Y-USA, and internal compliance requirements.
- Serves as a representative of the Virginia YMCA on necessary councils, boards, and committees.
- Mentors staff and volunteers.
- Gathers and maintains data on business practices, finances, and programming to drive future growth.
- Maintains a friendly, positive, safe, and supportive environment for members, participants, staff, and co-workers.
- Attends all staff meetings, board meetings, special events, and trainings as required.
- Follows the YMCA personnel policies, practices, salary administration plan, emergency procedures, child safety procedures, and risk management procedures.
- Performs all other duties as designated by the Board of Directors.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises staff, vendors, and volunteers.
Driving Responsibilities:
- Must have reliable transportation for short trips and be able to drive rental cars for longer trips.
Background Check:
- All offers of employment are contingent upon meeting the minimum requirements established for employment and criminal background checks.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and or move tables, chairs, and other equipment.
- Must be able to ride in a car for extended periods of time as well as walk distances in urban areas.
- Ability to work effectively in a variety of environments including indoors and outdoors.
Salary: Based on experience, starting at$80,000.
