TITLE: Bus Mechanic

SALARY RANGE: $27.96/per hour (under Union Teamsters Local 210)
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) is a public benefit corporation and politic arm of New York State, whose mission is to develop, maintain, and operate the infrastructure of Roosevelt Island. As part of this mandate, RIOC operates and maintains several facilities including the Cultural Center, Sportspark, and the Motorgate Garage; as well as other outdoor spaces such as Firefighter’s Field, Southpoint Park, and Lighthouse Park, among other facilities and locations. Infrastructure operations also includes the Aerial Tramway, and a free Red Bus Service that stops at various points on Roosevelt Island; and a Public Safety Department that serves as the community’s first responders in coordination with the New York City Police Department. RIOC’s workforce is also comprised of union workers from Local 210, 32BJ, PSOB, and other administrative staff.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The RIOC Bus Mechanic(s) is responsible for determining needed repairs and/or replacements on RIOC’s vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet state and federal requirements. These vehicles include, Diesel and hybrid passenger buses, gasoline powered vehicles, fully electric vehicles, and general equipment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Bus Mechanic(s) performs the diagnosis and repair of vehicular equipment including OBDII
- The Bus Mechanic(s) assist the Bus Garage Manager in establishing an efficient and effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventative care
- Complies with all Federal, state, and local laws and regulations for the maintenance, repair and operation of equipment and machines
- The Bus Mechanic inspects buses and transportation equipment for the purpose of ensuring its safe operating condition
- The Bus Mechanic may (if applicable) substitute for bus drivers when needed for the purpose of ensuring a qualified person is able to operate the bus route
- The Bus Mechanic(s) maintains and repairs heavy equipment (buses, forklifts, trucks, vans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment and in safe operating condition
- The Bus Mechanic(s) may perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
- Total number of vehicles cars (13), buses (7), trucks (11).
- Repair grounds equipment.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a clean valid NYS Driver License, CDL Class B.
- A proficiency in repair and maintenance of buses, trucks, and other automotive equipment
- A minimum of two years of bus maintenance experience
- An ability to communicate in a courteous manner
- A strong work ethic, and desire to get the job done.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and two (2) years of full-time satisfactory experience of supervision/management experience with heavy-duty diesel vehicle maintenance.
2. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above. Graduate study in the field of business, or public administration, or other related fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of 30 credits equaling one year of experience. Graduation from an accredited school may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However, all candidates must have at least two years of experience as described above.
