The Position: Speech-Language Pathologist: As a Speech-Language Pathologist at A Step Up Academy, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the communication skills of our students. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to assess, diagnose, and provide individualized therapeutic interventions to address speech and language challenges.
Job Description: Speech and Language Pathologist
Reports to: Director of Clinical Programming
Status: Full Time
Job Summary: To facilitate reduction, remediation, or elimination of speech and language impairments which interfere with the individual student’s ability to benefit from the school’s educational program. The Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) will work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, and cognitive-communication disorders in students with Autism and will provide consultation and support to instructional staff. This includes in-person and teletherapy services. Must demonstrate strong skills in partnering with families. Caseloads approximately 25 students.
Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Communication Disorders/ Speech and Language Pathology
Current PA State License for the Speech-Language Pathology
Current (dated within a year) Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Organize and conduct identification program of students with potential speech/language difficulties.
● Evaluate speech and language functions.
● Plan the clinical program for students who have been identified needing speech and language services.
● Implement the clinical program.
● Comply with state standards, school policies, and ASHA guidelines in the processes of referral, screening, and placement.
● A strong understanding and demonstrated commitment to ASUA’s philosophy of a collaborative approach to academic, behavioral, and clinical programming rooted in supportive and caring delivery of services and trauma-informed care.
● Complete comprehensive and appropriate evaluations according to state standards, school guidelines, and ASHA Guidelines.
● Provide a complete diagnostic summary report including a summary of evaluation information and educational relevance.
● Complete IEP paperwork in a timely manner.
- Implement Intervention Program.
- Develop and maintain the instructional component of the IEP according to the results of the evaluation and ongoing assessment of progress.
- Develop long-range goals and specific objectives.
- Complete daily notes for each student in a timely manner.
- Include methods and materials in planning.
- Document student progress, attendance, etc.
- Use a variety of approaches and materials to address the IEP that are compatible with the student’s age and interest, and abilities.
- Maintain ongoing assessment to verify progress toward established goals.
- Provide therapeutic intervention with students to enhance student performance.
● Maintain communication with the school staff regarding the role of the SLP, as well as to provide support and consultation.
● Maintain a physical/virtual environment conducive to learning.
● Stay abreast of and implement new instructional strategies.
● Attend workshops and in-service training to obtain up-to-date information in the area of speech and language and maintain required certifications and licensure.
● Travel between campuses as needed and directed.
● Duties can be performed in the building, community, or in other off-campus locations.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required. Adequate vision and hearing ability for monitoring children’s verbal and non-verbal responses. Ability to provide a quality speech/language model for students and staff.
Work Environment:
The Speech-Language Pathologist shall be assigned office and/or therapy space (building or virtual), amenable to individual, and small group consultations. When working with individual students or groups of students (or staff) a reasonably clean and distraction-free area is to be maintained in accordance with their supervisor. It shall be the duty of the SLP to maintain a travel schedule from one location to another, and to provide timely notices when published schedules cannot be maintained. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Job responsibilities include both inside and outside assignments. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
