Summary:
The Test Technician is responsible for applying instrumentation, destructively testing test samples, and generating accurate data related to the applied forces and the material's response. Additional responsibilities would include material characterization under magnification, by NDI, by chemical analysis or after prolonged environmental exposure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (May include some or all of the following):
Depending on assignment, a Test Technician would perform a combination of many of the following duties:
- Destructively test composite test samples using mechanical test machines
- Collect data using computerized data acquisition equipment (Windows based)
- Application of instrumentation on samples (gaging)
- Perform adhesive bonding during preparation of samples
- Perform thermal/chemical analysis (DMA/DSC/FTIR)
- Conduct chemical tests under a fume hood
- Take photographs of samples under microscope magnification
- Perform non-destructive inspection (Ultrasonics)
- Add and remove samples from environmental conditioning chambers and perform measuring and inspection of samples
- Carefully follow procedures outlined by Test Project Managers
- Communicate effectively with onsite engineers and visiting engineering clients
- Generate logbook entries, hard-copy reports and electronic data files associated with testing
- Take part in continuous improvement activities
- Maintain various laboratory testing equipment
- Maintain an acceptable level of housekeeping in all laboratory areas
- Test Lab Technician I: Relies on limited experience and judgment to complete assignments. Will receive moderate oversight of work in several areas by senior personnel.
- Test Lab Technician II: Relies on increased experience and judgment to complete assignments. Will receive limited oversight of work in several areas by senior personnel.

Education:
- Associates Degree in a technical discipline, -or-
- High school diploma or equivalent and lab experience as described below:
- o Test Lab Technician I: 1-2 years experience in a laboratory environment, -or-
- o Test Lab Technician II: 2-5 years experience in a laboratory environment, -or-
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
Computer Skills:
- Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office applications
- Advanced knowledge of Excel a plus
- Knowledge of LabVIEW/National Instruments equipment a plus
- Familiarity with computer programming a plus, specifically Visual Basic for Applications

- Math Skills - Basic math and geometry/trigonometry skill including angle measurement and calculation, conversion of fractions to decimal equivalents, etc
- Quality Management - Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools (wrenches, drills, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, etc)
- Experience with hydraulic systems a plus
- Knowledge of non-destructive testing (Ultrasonics) is a plus
- Knowledge of lean principles is a plus
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
Normal working conditions in a manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to hazardous chemicals, information about specific chemicals can be found in the plant MSDS, proper PPE will be provided when handling hazardous items. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
