The laboratory of Dr. David Watkins is looking for a talented Senior Research Associate who is interested in working in the development and efficacy testing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutic drugs against virus and other diseases including cancers. The Watkins’ lab has been focused on understanding the immune response to viruses and regularly works with BSL2 pathogens such as HIV/SIV, Dengue, Zika, and Yellow Fever. We also perform work under BSL3 conditions to handle pathogens like Coronaviruses, and influenza among others. This experienced researcher position carries out research/development activities by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. Using a wide degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position include making detailed observations, analyzing data and interpreting results with limited guidance from the Principal Investigator. This role compiles results, prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes, and assists with the preparation of results for publication. This role has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. The position will perform diverse experiments including cell culture maintenance, cell preparation from animal tissues, bacterial cloning and plasmid prep, PCR, protein purification, and flow cytometry analysis. This position will provide guidance to lower level staff.
Responsibilities include:
o Performs mammalian cell culture and bacterial DNA preps.
o Processes animal blood into different components and use in immunological techniques.
o Plans and schedules experiments consistent with the timeline and objectives of ongoing research projects.
o Aids research scientists within the laboratory with their day to day experiments.
o Assists in the preparation of manuscripts and grants.
