Curatorial and Development Assistant (part-time)
Salary: $18.55/hour
The Rockwall County Historical Foundation is looking for a Curatorial and Development Assistant to join our team as we preserve Rockwall County’s history and maintain relationships with the community.
The Curatorial and Development Assistant will serve as part of a team with the Museum Director and the Collections Assistant. They are also responsible for the implementation of programs and projects under the direction of the Museum Director, with latitude for independent judgment and action. This position will require creativity and attention to detail, solid organizational skills, and excellent customer service. This position will work in all aspects of a museum, from administration and programming to curation.
General Duties include but are not limited to:
- Create and lead programs for museum visitors of all ages;
- Conduct tours for museum visitors of all ages;
- Coordinate publicity and marketing efforts for programs with the Museum Director;
- Maintain a high level of professionalism in terms of ethics, content of work, and presentation of ideas;
- Create social media posts and other outreach platforms;
- Work on collections management and willingness to learn how to catalog utilizing the CatalogIt database program.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- At least one year of demonstrated experience with museum work, including cataloging and object handling.
- Demonstrated experience in educational or social programming and public speaking.
- Working knowledge of general museum operations including but not limited to: object handling, cataloging and research, general clerical functions, including PC operations, filing, record keeping, database management, etc.
- Knowledge of general history;
- Working knowledge of popular social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, and the public; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; operate personal computer and various software applications including PhotoShop or GIMP, Scribus, and Microsoft Office; operate peripheral equipment including scanners, tape players, and digital cameras.
Work Environment:
Incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain (over 50 lbs.), related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Communicating, i.e., talking, hearing, and seeing, is essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exists. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Compensation:
- The pay rate for this role is $18.55 per hour. Pay is based on approximately 15-20 hours/week. The schedule includes weekend hours and occasional evening hours.
Ideal Candidate would have the following:
- A passion for local history and a love of small museums. Previous experience or a degree in museum or preservation work is a plus but not required.
- Knowledge of museum best practices or willingness to learn and adhere to these standards.
- Experience establishing and managing public programs, outreach efforts, and other programs or events within budget.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public and volunteers.
- Understanding of social media platforms.
- Certification or ability to obtain certification in CPR and first aid.
