Our client is a consumer facing product manufacturer in the Greater Memphis area in need of a Principal Design Engineer who will lead the Design team and report to the VP of Product Development. Position Summary
This position is accountable for the overall design and technical rigor across multiple consumer categories and brands. This position will work across the organization driving and collaborating with functions in Product Management, Development, Operations, Sourcing, and Quality to assure the successful execution of business goals.
- Lead product design activities with limited supervision
- Design / develop components to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion and related processes including concept development and prototyping
- Create and interpret analyses to determine suitability of design concepts
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff
- Ensure on-time completion of Design Control deliverables via risk-based decision-making into the design process
- Grow and maintain knowledge current with related technologies
- Work with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure feasibility of designs
- Translate VoC feedback into product requirements
- Create and release engineering drawings, reports, and presentations
- Travel to supplier and manufacturing sites as required
- Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through design reviews
The following are the key competencies required in the role:
Relevant Device Design – Demonstrated ability to translate VoC feedback into product requirements and conceptualize, design, and effectively 3D model customer facing product concepts / components involving plastics, machined parts, and / or forged assemblies. Ability to define and work with mechanical subsystems within integrated modular architectures.
Analysis of Design Concepts – Ability to create and interpret analyses to determine suitability of design concepts with technical rigor; Capable of doing design analysis optimization, utilizing finite element analysis paired with simulated design of experiments as well as “hands-on” prototyping and testing.
Engineering Leadership – Demonstrated expertise in leading engineers in the design, analysis and development of new products, ensuring lean, collaborative, and effective teamwork.
Cross-Functional Collaboration – Proven ability to work across the various functions in an organization including effective presentation of technical findings, project status in design reviews to assure the successful execution of business goals.
Partner Collaboration - Ability to develop relationships and work effectively with external global manufacturers and / or suppliers to ensure feasibility of designs.
Technology Knowledge – Demonstrated ability to maintain and grow technical knowledge around related technologies and bring that knowledge to bear on a design process.
