General description
Every employee is expected to serve as a member of the real food store team in fulfilling the needs of our customers and our business, performing whatever tasks may be assigned in addition to the specific responsibilities described below.
Job purpose
Prepares all hot food, grab and go salads and packaged meals, soups and pizza. Has knowledge of organics, vegetarian, special diets, and healthy cooking using approved deli ingredient standards.
Responsibilities
Food preparation
- Prepare entrees and side dishes using only ingredients pre-approved in deli standards
- Food presented must be attractive, delicious and healthful.
- Set up and break down hot food and salad bars
- Assist in training new cooks when required
Customer Service
- Demonstrate excellence in customer service
- Portray sincere friendliness even under extenuating or frustrating circumstances
- Assist with customer requests, suggestions, complaints and questions
- Create signage for all items ensuring accuracy of ingredients and proper listing quantity order
- Assist customers by providing recipes and cooking tips and answering ingredient questions
- Keep current on any store events, activities or promotions to answer customer questions
Purchasing & Recipe Research
- Assist in maintaining and improving buying and stocking systems in order to ensure department is well-stocked, attractive and dynamic
- Assist with ordering deli ingredients
- Researches new and gets approval prior to using any new recipes to ensure menus and ingredients
- Meet deli nutrition standards
- Participate in cleaning operations
- Monitor temperatures in deli cooler, grab and go case, and cheese coffin
- Merchandize deli offerings to create attractive, appetizing displays and to meet sales targets
Cleanliness and Organization
- Know and follow proper food handling and sanitation procedures. Prevent all co-mingling of organic and non-organic ingredients according to organic certification policy
- Keep kitchen and prep areas clean, well organized and fully stocked
- Assist with putting away of all grocery, produce and packaging order
- Maintain the organization of the shelves in the kitchen walk-in and freezer
- Always keep an eye out for hazards in the kitchen and work to correct them
Teamwork
- Do your share of the unpopular tasks
- Maintain personal appearance, cleanliness, and hygiene standards appropriate for public contact, remember you are handling someone’s food
- The kitchen is a tight space, be conscientious in sharing this space with other staff
- Actively participate in all deli meetings
Other duties
- Learn and apply basic surveillance and security procedures to prevent or deter shoplifting
- Contribute to newsletter and special events planning if necessary
Qualifications
- Has knowledge in organics, vegetarian and healthy cooking
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including listening and giving clear instructions
- Able to make decisions in emergency situations
- Able to work as a team member
- Able to handle a broad range of responsibilities and multi-task
- Has excellent customer service experience
- Must be able to bend, stoop, reach lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Must be comfortable working on your feet on a concrete floor for 4 hours at a stretch
- Has knowledge about recipes, ingredients and cooking practices to answer customer’s questions
