In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Float Surgery Registered Nurse is responsible for rendering professional nursing care and directs and guides patient teaching and activities of ancillary personnel. This position is also responsible for the direct and indirect provision of professional nursing care of the patients in the operating room. They are accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of care delivered to patients within the perioperative and outpatient environment utilizing the nursing process. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.
Job Functions:

Follows and completes assignments as given by the charge nurse.
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
- Gathers supplies and equipment for surgical cases.
- Prepares surgery suite for surgical procedures.
- Restocks supplies in surgery suite when procedures have ended for the day.
- Monitors surgery inventory and notifies appropriate individual(s) when supplies are needed.
- Operates equipment and performs technical skills according to policies and standards; learns new skills and seeks assistance appropriately.
- Synthesizes patient data and implements action plan appropriate to situation (good judgment, critical thinking).
- Ensures documentation is complete, clear, concise, and according to policy.
- Collaborates with appropriate disciplines in developing coordinated outcomes and interventions; interacts with team members regarding patient progress.
- Assumes accountability and responsibility for attendance and timely completion of competencies, mandatory programs, unit specific requirement (i.e. ACLS), and unit meetings.
- Ensures that the Surgery Department and Operating Rooms are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
- Records all information correctly and accurately on patient’s chart.
- Follows established universal precautions in the use of gloves, gowns, and/or masks.
- Conducts individualized age-specific patient/family assessments upon admission according to defined standards.

Collects and documents data related to patient’s physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social condition.

Demonstrates age-specific competency in assessment of patients by the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding of the treatment needed.

Assesses patient/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style.

Formulates goals and outcomes based on assessment data.

Inputs entries into medical record follow hospital policy (date, time, use of appropriate abbreviations, and legibility).

Completes computerized documentation per policy.

Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
-
Current licensure in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse required.

BLS required upon hire.
-
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year of employment required.

Verbal, clerical, numerical, and manual dexterity, color vision and near visual acuity, proper lifting techniques and body mechanics.

Staff member must maintain competency for SGH Surgery, MMH surgery, Belpre Endoscopy, and Belpre Interventional Joint and Spine.
