Job Description Chief Engineer – Reporting to M & R, Port Engineering, and Vice President of Operations
Job Overview - The Chief Engineer is responsible for driving the overall maintenance, operation, and repair of all engineering systems on tugboats and tankers. This includes ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of all mechanical and electrical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Performing all maintenance and repairs of the tugboat’s engines, propulsion systems, generators, and other machinery. This includes tasks such as cleaning, lubricating and adjusting machinery components.
- Monitoring the performance of the tugboat’s machinery and systems, including engines, pumps, valves, and electrical systems. Escalate any abnormalities or malfunctions of equipment to the M & R team including Port Engineering.
- Manage all machinery and equipment by following established procedures and safety protocols. This includes starting and stopping engines, operating pumps, valves, and adjusting controls as needed.
- Drive all routine inspections and checks of machinery to confirm proper functioning and compliance with safety standards. Document inspection findings and implement any necessary repairs and adjustments.
- Must be prepared to respond to emergencies and equipment failures by following established emergency procedures in resolving issues promptly and safely.
- Inventory control, working with M & R, Port Engineering and Purchasing departments guaranteeing the tugboat has an adequate supply of spare parts and tools on a consistent basis.
- Adherence to compliance with safety regulations and procedures at all times, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while fulfilling maintenance and repair activities.
- Record keeping, must maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, spare parts used, and fuel consumption.
- Special projects, provide upgrades and modifications to the tugboat’s machinery and systems as needed
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited maritime college/institution preferred plus a minimum 5 years of experience as Chief Engineer role on similar vessels.
- Proven track record of success managing engineering teams and maintaining vessel systems.
- Possess a valid USCG engineers license appropriately endorsed for the HP of the vessel in National or Oceans service, with appropriate HP. Must have MMC, a valid TWIC card issued by the TSA, and all other pertinent training required by the USCG regulations and international conventions. Engineers must meet all SOLAS requirements or agree to obtain the proper SOLAS documentation. Strong knowledge of maritime safety regulations and standards.
- Extensive experience in marine engineering, preferably on tugboats and tankers.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and in challenging conditions.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, must be proactive, take ownership of tasks and responsibilities with a willingness to get their hands dirty.
- Familiarity with GE class vessels is a huge plus.
