ECU Health Beaufort Hospital is located in Washington and serves as a campus ECU Health Medical Center, our Level I Trauma Center in Greenville. The 142-bed full-service hospital offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services including medical, surgical, intensive care, emergency, pediatrics and women's services. In addition there is a lab, diagnostic imaging services, physical and respiratory therapy. The facility also features the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, offering leading-edge chemotherapy and radiation therapy, among other cancer services.
Position Summary
This position will assist the exercise physiologists in carrying out the exercise prescription and plan of care and monitoring the patient's response to exercise.
Responsibilities
1. Delivers direct quality patient care utilizing clinical skill and knowledge.
a. Assist exercise physiologist, plan, implement and supervise to exercise prescription and progression
for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.
b. Monitors and communicates changes in patient's condition or response to exercise therapy and
documents in medical record.
2. Implements, monitors and documents exercise prescription and progression of exercise prescription
under the supervision of an Exercise Physiologist with an Exercise Specialist certification.
a. Assesses patients for appropriateness for exercise, potential problems or limitations that impact
exercise.
b. Utilizes clinical judgment to provide a range of options for assisting cardiovascular and pulmonary
outpatients to embrace safe exercise as a therapy for risk factor management.
c. Uses a multidisciplinary approach and includes patient and family in implementing, encouraging,
motivation and monitoring exercise therapies.
3. Assists in the coordination for orientation of patients to the outpatient setting, equipment, safety standards
and educates the patients regarding their responsibility in the process.
4. Conducts outpatient cardiovascular and pulmonary therapy sessions.
a. Assures appropriate safe setting for the conduct of exercise therapy sessions.
b. Leads exercise therapy session to include appropriate components of warm up, conditioning phase
and cool down.
c. Monitors patients for signs of exercise intolerance using ECG, symptom history, vital signs, pulse
oximetry, level of dyspnea and rating of perceived exertion to adjust patient's prescription as needed
under the supervision of an exercise physiologist with an exercise specialist certification.
5. Develops leadership role.
a. Assumes responsibility of continued professional growth and development.
b. Assists in facilitating needed changes in policies, procedures and protocols.
c. Reports changing patient status and program staffing needs to appropriate personnel.
Minimum Requirements
Some degree work towards a degree in exercise science is required.
3 month internship may substitute for the required experience.
Less than 1 year experience in cardiovascular and/or pulmonary rehabilitation. 3 month internship may substitute for the required experience.
