instruction and dedicated coaches! Trades Helpers perform semi-skilled work duties while assisting journey level professionals. You’ll be mentored by your peers and top leaders in the industry. Trades Helpers may also work independently on assigned projects. Trades Helpers are required to work in all weather conditions, perform physical tasks, and be able to operate heavy machinery safely.
*Trades Helper Specializations:*
Electrical
* Assist Electricians with the installation, alteration, and maintenance of various electrical equipment and systems
* Trades Helper Electricians may also work independently on basic tasks such as re-lamping and socket replacement
Structural
* Assist Structural Maintenance Mechanics repair and perform construction work on buildings, warehouses, storage tanks, towers, piers and fenders. Such work includes carpentry, masonry, metal burning/welding, painting, paving, and roofing.
Paving
* Assist Paving Mechanics to work on concrete, asphalt paving, epoxy surfacing in the construction, maintenance and repair of existing structures, and different kinds of pavements, roads, sidewalks, runways, taxiways, etc.
Sign Mechanic
* Assist Sign Mechanics to perform (construction, installation, erection, preventive maintenance, and repair) a wide variety of transportation signage, including but not limited to overhead and cantilever signs, externally and internally lighted signs for highway direction, signs attached to buildings and overpasses.
Trade Helpers work a 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts (mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays) and working inclement weather.
Trade Helpers are assigned to Port Authority facilities throughout the NY/NJ areas.
*Responsibilities: *
*Trades Helpers will assist Journey-Level professionals with the following: *
* Perform general duties including using heavy machinery, power tools and a variety of materials.
* Proactively identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems.
* Provide recommendations and solutions to ensure the facility is running efficiently.
* Repair and ensure equipment in operating in a safe and efficient manner.
* Perform maintenance checks.
* Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
*Qualifications: *
*Candidates must possess the following qualifications to be eligible for this position: *
* High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
* Valid Driver’s License.
* One (1) year paid full-time work experience in the trade -OR- completion of a vocational school program and at least 6 months of full-time paid experience in the trade.
* Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of employment.
* Candidates must be able to attain security credentials as required (e.g., SIDA, TWIC) for placement at certain facilities.

*Ideal candidates will possess the following profile: *
* Knowledge of the methods, practices, and safety precautions in one of the specialization skilled trades mentioned above.
* Knowledge of the accepted materials and tools in one of the specialization skilled trades mentioned above.
* Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
* Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
* Ability to lift and manipulate heavy machinery and objects.
* Knowledge of shop maintenance and clean-up procedures.
* Experience working with diverse groups of people from all different backgrounds with respect.
* Good written and verbal communication skills including effectively communicating with supervisors and upper management.
*Selection Process: *
Qualified candidates will be assessed via a written exam and a practical exam.

*Compensation & Benefits:*
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers an outstanding benefits package and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement.
The starting salary for each title is dependent on the collective bargaining agreement as follows:
* *Electrical* – *$22.56 *per hour
* *Paving *– *$23.03* per hour
* *Sign Mechanic* – *$23.03* per hour
* *Structural* – *$24.43* per hour
Employees are eligible for a full benefits package including health, retirement, paid time off along with pay increases subject to the collective bargaining agreement.
