Summary
The animal Control Officer, under the direction of the Patrol-Lieutenant, enforces the Cocopah Tribe’s Cocopah Law and Order Code governing animals; protects and rescues domesticated animals, captures and impounds dead, sick, injured, and abused animals, and maintains public health standards. Maintains records and reports; transports to Human Society, disposes of animals as needed. When not responding to animal control issues, maintains station and premises and performs other related duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Receives calls from dispatch and drives assigned vehicle to location.
- Investigates alleged animal abuse, and violations of the Cocopah Law and Order Code related to animals or reports of injured, stray, sick, or dangerous animals; interviews individuals having contact with the animal, such as the owners.
- Takes possession of animals that show signs of neglect, inhumane treatment, disease, or malnutrition.
- Transports animals to agency, shelter, or veterinarian, as appropriate, while attempts to locate owners are made and when the animal needs to be impounded or investigated for diseases such as rabies.
- Patrol assigned areas in animal control vehicles, seeking animals that are stray, sick, injured, or deceased; provide minor medical treatment when needed.
- Completes records, forms and prepares reports concerning daily activities, fees collected, citations given by Police Officers, investigations made, and controlled drugs used.
- Provides information on and answers inquiries concerning licensing, vaccinations, euthanasia, adoptions, spraying and neutering, and other related matters.
- Uses department-issued weapons as needed to capture and euthanize animals according to established protocol.
- Prepares and maintains an animal control vehicle; utilizes a variety of animal control devices and equipment including leash, muzzle, traps, catch pole, net, radio, and tranquilizing equipment.
- Testifies as an expert witness in legal proceedings.
- Speaks to community groups about the proper care and feeding of pets and the value of pet population control.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Ability to read, comprehend, and explain state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances about animal control.
- Ability to communicate with members of the public and to obtain their cooperation and compliance.
- Ability to handle animals in various forms of distress safely and humanely.
- Ability to learn and recognize physical and behavioral characteristics of animals.
- Ability to learn and recognize signs of rabies and other common animal illnesses.
- Ability to euthanize animals that are dangerous, sick, or unwanted.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Qualifications

Must be able to pass DPS/FBI fingerprint background check.
- Valid Arizona Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol test.
Education and/or Experience
-
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, (1) year of animal-related work with handling and caring for domestic animals, OR experience as a groomer, veterinary technician, humane officer, animal control officer, law enforcement, or specialized animal control training.
- National Animal Control Association (NACA) certificate preferred. or obtains within the first 120-day training period.
- Must be able to stoop, squat, crawl, climb, and perform other physical duties as needed to investigate locations and animals and to apprehend animals when needed.
- Must be able to lift to 50 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all types of weather.
