Position Summary: Prepares surgical and autopsy specimens for gross and microscopic examination. Assists pathologists with special procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine histologic techniques
- Routine techniques include: Fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining
- Assists pathologists with surgical and frozen specimens
- Assists in fine needle aspirations
- Operates and troubleshoots departmental automation
- Assists in maintaining inventory at appropriate levels
- Accessions specimen upon arrival in Histology laboratory
- Promotes a clean and safe environment of care, utilizing the SAFE error prevention habits
- Provides the highest standard of privacy and confidentiality in matters involving patients, coworkers, and the hospital by abiding by the Standards of Conduct
- Other duties as assigned that pertain to proper functioning of the histology lab
Required Qualifications:
Education and Training:
Histotechnician, HT (ASCP) or eligible. To be eligible for the HT (ASCP) exam, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years
- 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from a regionally accredited* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree, AND one year of full time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years OR one year of full time acceptable veterinary, industry or research experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S. or Canada within the last five years
- 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from a regionally accredited* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree, AND successful completion of a 50 week U.S. military histotechnician training course within the last ten years.
