An employee in this position will drive Library vehicles to different locations during work hours. An employee working in this position will need to be available 4pm-8pm Monday - Thursday, while also being able to work some Saturdays (7am-4pm). Someone working in this position will need to be able to work independently.
Position Summary
An employee in this position advances the mission of the Library by ensuring safe and timely delivery of materials and other items across the system and performing light maintenance tasks and custodial duties in assigned areas of library buildings and grounds. This role may also assist with facilities-related projects.
Duties and Responsibilities

Delivers materials, supplies, and other needed items to library facilities and other destinations as assigned.

Performs all duties related to the receipt and shipping of mail and other library materials.

Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Completes light or semi-skilled maintenance tasks [e.g., minor non-technical repairs, painting, etc.] as needed across the system.

Vacuums, sweeps, and mops floors, including public hallways and department offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms.

Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture, equipment, fixtures, surfaces, walls, window sills, trim, doors, cabinets, vents, or other surfaces: cleans office equipment, tables, and telephones; washes/cleans glass doors, windows, and blinds.

Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls and floor areas.

Maintains supply levels in restrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.

Empties and cleans trash containers, including transporting bagged waste to outside trash receptacles.

Cleans light fixtures and replaces bulbs.

Assists with stripping and waxing floors and shampooing carpet.

Cleans spills, spot cleans carpets, and removes graffiti as needed.

Maintains exterior areas around buildings as needed, which may include sweeping mats or walkways, hosing sidewalks and entryways, emptying ashtrays/urns, or picking up and disposing of debris/litter, clearing snow and ice.

Utilizes library alarm systems and alarm codes as authorized and in a manner that consistently protects library facilities and property.

Works a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

Performs general tasks associated with work activities as needed, which may include moving furniture/equipment, assembling equipment, setting up rooms for meetings/events, folding/stacking tables and chairs, or loading/unloading materials.

May serve as a back-up to other Maintenance staff as needed.

May assist with training of Maintenance Technician I and II staff members.

May serve on library committees as needed.

Familiarity with the appropriate use of cleaning agents for varied surface types and the preparation, use, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents is required.

Familiarity with the proper use of ladders, dollies, cart, and other equipment used for maintenance is required.

Familiarity with safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture is required.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions related to all maintenance related materials is required.

Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is preferred. Relevant business management systems such as general ledger, HRIS, CRM, etc. is preferred.
Education and Experience

Education: High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.

Years of relevant experience: 2 to 5 years is required.

Years of experience supervising: None.

Certifications or licensure: Ohio drivers’ license and ability to maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Library’s liability insurance carrier is required. Certification from an accredited institution in one or more generally recognized skilled trades [e.g., mechanical/electrical repair, plumbing, construction/carpentry, etc.] is preferred.

Experience in one or more semi-skilled maintenance tasks [e.g., minor non-technical repairs, painting, etc.] is required.

Experience in work related to one or more certified trade/craft skills [e.g. carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc.] is strongly preferred.

Experience with the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of cleaning and maintaining public buildings is required.

Experience working with all levels within an organization is preferred.

Experience in public library or public-sector organizations is preferred.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
-
The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

This position is performed in both office and outdoor settings as the work requires and may include attendance at off-site meetings in various settings. For work completed outside and/or in transit, employees may be exposed to the full range of inclement weather conditions common to Northeast Ohio.

Work is generally completed on various shifts - before, during, and after the Library’s hours of operations. There may be the occasional need to respond to critical situations outside of this schedule.

Because of the nature of this work, employees may be expected to work more than 40 hours per week and may be expected to be on-call for emergency situations.

Work requires accessing areas for the structural maintenance and inspection of the facilities, including but not limited to rooms containing mechanical and electrical equipment, roofs and rooftop mechanical areas.

Work requires the use of ladders, chemical solutions, and a variety of maintenance-related equipment.

Work requires extensive walking, light to moderate physical effort such as stooping and bending, climbing and occasional lifting of objects, up to 50 pounds, and pushing wheeled carts weighing up to 400 pounds.

Travel by Library-owned automobile or truck and a valid State of Ohio driver’s license along with the ability to maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Library’s liability insurance carrier may be required. Some travel by personal vehicle and/or occasional overnight travel may also be required.
