Handles the day-to-day dispatching of SJC Transport, Inc. d/b/a Airgroup. This job ensures that our customers are serviced at a high level by managing a group of core business partners and drivers. Responsible for creating driver routes according to customer pickup and deliveries and in compliance with DOT regulations and company policy. Must be able to plan freight routes and work in a constantly changing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
They include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Operations
- First point of contact to answer customer inquiries regarding scheduling pickups, deliveries, and quotes at the local level
- Assign drivers to a schedule/route and manage the schedule to keep deliveries to schedule daily
- Add/Change driver routes as pickup and delivery requests come in daily
- Quote customers on local pickup and delivery requests as needed
- Negotiate rates with agents and contractors on non-contracted lanes
- Communicate with customers, drivers, and business partners throughout the day on pickup/delivery status
- Schedule all appointments as necessary for pickup and deliveries
- Work with airlines and carriers to resolve issues as they arise and execute solutions
- Assist drivers on issues that arise throughout the day as needed
- Counsel drivers, business partners on service failures and safety infractions as needed
- Understand volume and freight types to ensure truck capacity is utilized
- Monitor road conditions and weather issues daily and communicate with drivers when needed
- Knowledge of the Bay Area freeway system, bridge locations, and general bay area geography helpful
- Coordinate freight drops nightly for outbound shipments
- Coordinate freight recoveries for all inbound shipments
- Maintain proper records and assist with the finalization process daily
- Manage equipment that may be needed on a specific job ensuring trucks have what is required to complete all jobs for any given day
Other Duties and Responsibilities :
- Load/Unload trucks as needed
- Package, band and shrink wrap freight as needed
- Prepare correspondence to vendors or customers as needed
- Prepare master bills or other forms for daily shipments as needed
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No direct supervisory responsibilities at this time of company employees but is accountable for managing owner-operators, business partners, and contractors used for pickups and deliveries.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- High School Diploma required. Bachelors degree in Logistics helpful
- 3-5 years dispatching experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience helpful;
- Intermediate level math aptitude required;
- Experience with freight management systems helpful (e.g. Cargowise, Crown, SAP, 7L Freight Tracking System);
- The ability to multi-task and prioritize work with strong attention to detail is required
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills and ability to handle sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality and discretion needed;
- Ability to successfully foster teamwork, sharing of responsibilities, and open communication
- Intermediate level computer skills using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook required;
- Capable of working effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment
- Knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations helpful
- Knowledge of Dangerous Goods is a plus
- Dangerous Goods Certification a plus
- Forklift Certification a plus (will be required to get certified)
- Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check
