Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Supervision and Guidance:
- Operates under the general direction and supervision of the charge nurse.
- Seeks clarification from the charge nurse regarding any uncertainties about assignments or functions.
Patient Care:
- Provides bedside services and patient care according to standard procedures and facility policies.
- Assists with the physical comfort and mental well-being of residents by aiding in daily tasks such as bathing, feeding, dressing, and grooming.
- Monitors and assists with the maintenance of personal hygiene, including oral hygiene, hair care, and nail trimming.
Safety and Reporting:
- Detects and addresses potential hazards to prevent accidents or injuries to residents.
- Observes and reports symptoms, reactions, and changes in residents’ conditions to the charge nurse.
- Reports any accidents or incidents immediately to the charge nurse.
Rehabilitative Support:
- Encourages and participates in rehabilitative measures.
- Assists residents with ambulation and the use of mobility aids such as braces, wheelchairs, canes, and walkers.
- Conducts or assists with active and passive exercises as instructed.
Environment Maintenance:
- Ensures the cleanliness and proper storage of equipment and supplies.
- Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly environment for residents, including cleaning overbed tables and straightening rooms.
Resident Support:
- Monitors, assists, or completes tasks related to dressing, bathing, and personal hygiene.
- Encourages proper table manners and assists with eating during mealtime, reporting changes in appetite to the charge nurse.
- Provides fresh water to residents and maintains clean water pitchers and glasses.
Care Plan Implementation:
- Demonstrates knowledge of each resident’s care plan and performs tasks as required.
- Follows guidelines for special programs such as bowel and bladder training.
Behavior and Attitude:
- Maintains a cheerful attitude and treats all residents with respect and kindness.
- Adheres to appropriate conduct, behavior, and appearance standards according to company policies.
Confidentiality:
- Maintains patient-resident confidentiality at all times.
Training and Development:
- Participates in orientation, in-service training programs, and the facility’s Staff Development Program.
- Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development through observation, on-the-job training, and workshops.
Teamwork:
- Functions as a team member to uphold all standards of care and supports the facility’s philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Answers call light devices promptly.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Monitors intake and output as directed.
- Turns and repositions residents as per facility policy.
- Performs all activities of daily living according to the treatment plan.
- Bathes and changes residents' clothing after incontinent episodes.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of infection control techniques.
- Performs all other duties as assigned to meet Federal and State standards and complies with the facility's objectives and policies.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Must provide only services for which they have demonstrated competence.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in skills and techniques necessary to care for residents' needs as identified through Resident Assessments and outlined in the Plan of Care.
Personality and Attitude:
- Must possess a personality attuned to meeting the needs of the infirm and aged.
Qualifications:
- Female Only (Bonafide Occupational Qualification).
Knowledge and Compliance:
- Must be knowledgeable about the facility’s policies and procedures and ensure adherence to them.
- Must understand and comply with state and federal requirements.
Interdepartmental Familiarity:
- Must have a basic understanding of the functions of various departments within the facility.
Technical Skills:
- Must be familiar with standard techniques for personal service care of residents and the care of equipment, including mechanical lifting devices and other handling aids, and supplies.
Initiative and Judgment:
- Must be able to use initiative and exercise good judgment in performing their duties.
Education and Experience:
- Must be a graduate of a state-approved certified nurse aide school.
Licensure/Certification:
- Must have successfully completed the state board of certification.
- Must hold a current State of Texas certification as a certified nurse aide.
Working Conditions:
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand and walk throughout the shift on tile floors and carpeted surfaces while making rounds, supervising staff, and assisting residents in their rooms.
- Must be able to sit for up to two to three hours a day for tasks such as report writing, charting, and other duties.
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds.
- Must be able to assist in pushing wheelchairs, geri-chairs, and carts with supplies throughout an eight-hour shift.
- Must be able to bend and twist when assisting and transporting residents or picking up items from the floor.
Handling and Vision:
- Must be able to properly handle blood and urine.
- Must have corrected vision to read care plans, physicians’ orders, nurse’s notes, and other written materials.
- Must be able to see various degrees of color on residents’ skin and read medications correctly.
Hearing and Communication:
- Must have corrected hearing to understand residents and staff conversations.
- Must be able to communicate frequently throughout the day to discharge various orders to staff.
Environmental Conditions:
- Must be able to work in settings where floors may be wet and around various odors and oxygen.
- May be occupationally exposed to blood and other potential infectious materials.
- Must comply with infection control procedures.
Temperament and Response:
- Must remain calm and composed, especially in stressful situations involving residents, families, and employees who may be abusive or threatening.
- Must possess warmth, understanding, and responsiveness to residents’ needs and reactions.
- Must exercise patience and tact when dealing with families and visitors.
Decision-Making and Safety:
- Must be able to use initiative, judgment, and resourcefulness to make decisions.
- Must remain alert to identify and report hazards promptly or take corrective measures as directed.
