Job Summary:
The Family Advocate provides primary support for the day-to-day operations and needs of the Emergency Shelter Program. The Family Advocate reports to the Director of Shelter Services and works closely with all programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Support: Develop safety plans, manage cases, and advocate for client needs.
- Crisis Counseling: Provide intervention and referrals through crisis line.
- Community Resources: Connect clients to community services and referrals.
- Education & Employment: Assist with educational guidance and job services.
- Transportation & Welfare: Provide information on transport and assist with welfare benefits.
- Health & Legal Referrals: Refer clients to medical, mental health, and legal services.
- Shelter Operations: Conduct intake, manage policies, and support daily living skills.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate client records and perform follow-up services.
- Networking & Engagement: Network with agencies and participate in staff meetings.
- Volunteer Support: Guide and support volunteers.
- Legal Education: Provide education on the Illinois Domestic Violence Act, Orders of Protection, and stalking laws to enhance client safety and abuser accountability, providing referral sources internally and/or externally when appropriate.
Skills:
- Client Advocacy: Develop safety plans, manage cases, and provide crisis intervention.
- Resource Coordination: Connect clients to community services, health, and legal resources.
- Educational & Employment Assistance: Offer guidance on education and job services.
- Administrative Competence: Conduct intakes, manage records, and support daily operations.
- Communication & Networking: Effectively communicate and network with agencies.
- Volunteer Management: Guide and support volunteers.
- Communication Skills: Strong written, oral, and interpersonal abilities.
- Client Engagement: Ability to listen actively, motivate clients, and support their progress.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s in social work, counseling, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Counseling Knowledge: Understanding of counseling theories and client empowerment.
- Model Knowledge: Familiarity with the Sanctuary model and its application in a shelter setting.
- Physical Requirement: Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to relate to diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
- Commitment: Dedication to supporting survivors, children’s issues, and working in a cooperative, violence-free environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant certifications in social work or counseling.
- Prior experience in a non-profit organization.
- A proven track record of successful program management and staff supervision.
- Familiarity with the Sanctuary model and its application in a shelter setting.
Preferred Certifications:
- IMCAN / IMCAT certification (training available).
- 40-Hour Domestic Violence Certificate Illinois (training available).
- First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification/ Card (training available).
