Controls Engineer

Invariant Corporation is seeking a talented and motivated Controls Engineer. The ideal candidate will be able fully design, build, test, and operate control systems. They will provide review of system requirements, development and build of a design to meet the requirements, and design refinement based on test results. The candidate will participate in all aspects of Controls Engineering throughout the full program lifecycle (concept definition, design, test, and commissioning).
Duties Include:
- Design and Development:
- Develop control system architecture based on project requirements.
- Design control algorithms and logic to meet performance specifications.
- Specify and select appropriate hardware components such as PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), sensors, actuators, etc.
- Develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams as necessary.
- Programming and Configuration:
- Program PLCs and HMIs using languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or other PLC programming languages.
- Configure and integrate SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
- Develop custom software interfaces and applications for control systems.
- Testing and Troubleshooting:
- Conduct system integration testing to validate control system functionality.
- Perform troubleshooting and debugging of control systems during installation and commissioning phases.
- Optimize control system performance and conduct tuning as necessary.
- Documentation and Compliance:
- Create technical documentation including user manuals, test procedures, and design specifications.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations (e.g., safety standards, electrical codes).
- Project Management:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and software developers.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources related to control systems.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users and maintenance staff.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated with advancements in control system technology and industry trends.
- Propose and implement improvements to existing control systems for enhanced performance and efficiency.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s) may be preferred for senior positions.
- Proven experience in designing and programming control systems, preferably in industrial automation or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of control system theory, instrumentation, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., NEC, UL, CE).
- Obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance

- Effective communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Some travel may be required depending on project requirements
- Work well in a small, fast-paced, and mission-driven environment with co-workers, management, and customers
- Demonstrate innovation, quick learning, excellent communication skills and adaptive thinking
- Work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise good judgment
Work Environment:
Office, lab, and field environment.
- Must possess ability to safely lift and carry up to 35 lbs. with occasional bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and reaching above shoulder level, minimal walking, climbing, crouching
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate is required
