Instructional Assistant - Music is a position for individuals who:

Understand the process of formal music education in a classroom setting

Are able to play at least one symphonic instrument at an advanced level

Are capable of providing instructional support to individuals and groups
PLEASE NOTE: As part of the selection process, qualified candidates are required to demonstrate a prepared piece of standard literature on their own instrument.
SMMUSD does NOT provide instruments for candidate use.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of an administrator, assists in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; performs related clerical tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:-
Must have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, AND
-
Must pass the District's Instructional Assistant examination, AND
-
Must have completed 48 units at an institution of higher learning (with some college coursework related to music); OR
-
Obtained an Associate's Degree (or higher), with some college coursework related to music
EXPERIENCE:-
Paid or verifiable volunteer experience working with children in an organized music setting.

JOB DUTIES:

Assists in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts, appreciation, theory and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; conducts and monitors exercises, rehearsals and performances; takes attendance and maintains related records

Maintains and controls student behavior during class and individual group sessions; disciplines students according to established procedures

Participates in the coordination of student music activities and lessons; participates in student activities related to music education and rehearsals
-
Performs clerical tasks as assigned including duplicating materials, filing, typing and maintaining assigned records; reproduces, distributes and maintains music materials; prepares music packets for students
-
Communicates with teachers and maintains effective relationships with students and parents regarding student progress, behavior and related matters
-
Assists students with adjusting or preparing instruments; responds to questions from students as needed
-
Attends meetings and in-services as assigned
-
Performs related duties as assigned

SUPERVISION:
Supervision is received from an administrator. Technical and functional direction is received from a teacher. No supervision of other staff is exercised.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Classroom work environment, outside instructional spaces (e.g., football stadium, track field, auditorium, etc.). May be exposed to inclement weather conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to play instruments or demonstrate activities. Seeing to read musical scores/parts. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects.

EXAMINATION PROTESTS:
Protest of any part of the examination process must be in writing and received in the office of the Director of Classified Personnel no later than five (5) working days from the date you were notified of examination results. All notifications are sent electronically via email. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. We are not responsible for any incoming mail that is lost or misdirected after it has been entrusted to the US Postal Service.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST:
This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available. Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score. Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT:
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment. Education transcripts, training certificates, and additional references may be requested for verification purposes.
