VISION FOR POSITION
The Behavior Specialist Counselor (BSC) helps the school realize New Dawn Charter School’s vision for ensuring all students, regardless of behavior, are provided with the structures and support needed to attend school and graduate successfully. The BSC ensures that teachers and other staff have the tools and skills necessary to work with students struggling with behavioral issues that have blocked them from success in school. In collaboration with the School Leadership Team, the BSC works with an identified group of students experiencing identified types of behavior (roaming, inattention, substance use, time management, fighting, etc.—all Tiers 2 and 3) to develop a shared vision for behavior management, establish clear lines of communication describing the management, gathers insight on how to best work with students, and helps families to support the learning at home.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Behavior Specialist Counselor (BSC) works to create and enhance a culture of achievement and respect where high expectations and results are the norm. The BSC’s actions must always be aligned with the New Dawn Charter School mission, vision, and core values. We are looking for a qualified behavior specialist with experience working with high school students and/or young adults with emotional and/or behavior problems to develop plans and strategies to help the student remain successfully in school. The essential functions for Behavior Specialist Counselor are as follows:
- Observing and assessing students' behavior.
- Assisting with determining student Tiers.
- Developing and implementing plans to address behavioral issues including FBA and BIPs.
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with special needs.
- Collaborate with counselors in developing IEP goals aligned to behavior plans.
- Utilize behavioral therapy techniques to address challenging behaviors and promote positive behavior management.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to students to foster their personal and academic growth.
- Supporting students throughout their education.
- Communicating with students' teachers and families to implement behavior plans.
- Monitoring and recording progress.
- Conducting assessments to determine improvements.
- Maintaining student records and behavior reports.
- Collaborating with other staff, teachers, and administrators.
- Training the school community on techniques for de-escalation
- Assisting teachers to develop classroom management plans that encompass students who are struggling emotionally and/or behaviorally.

- Reflect critically upon experience and practice; identify areas for further professional development as part of a professional development plan that is linked to professional growth and school/network level goals; access meaningful learning experiences; listen thoughtfully to other viewpoints and responds constructively to suggestions and criticisms.
- Use feedback to inform and update Individual Professional Development Plan.
- Fulfill all outlined and related functions professionally and thoroughly.

Education & Experience:
· Bachelor's degree (Master’s preferred) in psychology, counseling, mental health, or a related field
· License as appropriate for field
· Strong and proven working knowledge of behavioral therapy and applied behavioral analysis
· Experience working with students with special needs, particularly in a school setting
· Strong knowledge of behavior management techniques and strategies
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with young adults
· Conversational Spanish preferred
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
