School Health Aide with the East Valley Institute of Technology. The starting date is contingent upon completing the required fingerprint card and completeing the onboarding process. The beginning annual salary range for this position starts at
$20.44 per hour based on a combination of education and experience.
JOB TITLE: School Nurse Aide
REPORTS TO: School Nurse
DEPARTMENT: School Site (Power & Main Campuses)
TERM: 10 months
STATUS: Full-Time/ Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
The School Health Assistant will support and assist EVIT’s School Nurse in the daily operation of EVIT’s health offices at the Power and Main campuses. The School Health Aide will help administer basic first aid, medication administration and other health related care to students and staff according to EVIT’s policies and procedures. This position will help update and track health records while maintaining confidentiality. This position will provide clerical and administrative support to the School Nurse.
Essential Functions:
- Supports EVIT’s Mission, Vision and Purpose.
- Works under the school nurse’s direction to plan the student health care program at EVIT (Nurse’s Office); may seek advice from the medical community and the Arizona Department of Health Services in helping developing policies and procedures.
- Works closely with school personnel, i.e., team leaders, counseling staff, in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.
- May provide emergency care and prepare accident reports, as necessary.
- May assist in assessment of classroom and other work environments to identify potential health or safety problems.
- Develops and implements record keeping procedures that ensure proper documentation of health services for students seen, i.e., establishing and maintaining health records of students who were provided assistance at the Nurse’s Office.
- Contacts health and other social service agencies, as needed, linking community support services for students at EVIT, such as general health care for pregnant teens, etc.
- May take temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal; uses professional judgment to assess conditions of students; may provide first aid, as needed.
- Monitor and supervise students that are sick or injured until they can be pick-up by parents or medical personnel.
- Observes, evaluates and records significant conditions and reactions of students served; maintains and updates health records; provides follow-up of students up to 30 days or as needed.
- Observes strict guidelines to guard against infectious diseases and other dangers; maintains a clean and orderly office area; ensures that waste and byproducts are disposed according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and procedures.
- Orders and maintains supplies and equipment.
- In coordination with counseling staff, may assist families with social service agencies.
- Uses professional judgment in calling for additional assistance, i.e., 9-1-1 EMS, parents, etc.
- Ensures confidentiality of all program records and student information.
- Develops and establishes effective working relationships with other school districts who send students to EVIT.
- Attends meetings and training per requirements of the School Nurse.
- Good attendance and being on-time are import to provide service to students and staff.
- Perform other related duties as required and needed.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of record keeping procedures, including the ability to collect and organize data and information for required reports.
- Possesses strong organizational skills.
- Possesses effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, parents and students and the general public.
- Ability to work with a diverse population, including working with youth (16-21 years old) effectively.
- Ability to work independently and to manage work assignments in a highly interpersonal contact environment;
- Must be able to deal effectively with stress caused by workload and situations as they occur.
- Must be tactful, have good interpersonal skills and sound judgment.
- Moderate proficiency in typing; knowledge of computer and applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google Suite.
- Have good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality of records and communications.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, organization and prioritize the health office.
- Ability to accept limitation of responsibility; ability to follow protocol when administering care.
- Knowledge of immunization requirements according to Arizona State Law and be able to access State immunization program.
Licensing /Certification and Other Requirements:
- Must obtain a IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
- One year experience working as medical assistant or certified nursing assistant in an acute, subacute or home health care.
- Prefer experience with working with grades 9-12 school aged children.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Current CPR and/or BLS Certified.
- Certified Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician Level 1 with current CPR card
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

- Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities including preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
