Position Summary: Work in this class involves the application of skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance, construction and cleanliness of streets and other city facilities. An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks assigned by the public works superintendent. Promotion to maintenance worker II requires three years satisfactory work experience as maintenance worker I, completion of the Road Scholar Training, recommendation of the superintendent, and approval of the mayor.
· Assists with construction, installation, alteration, servicing, maintenance, repair and/or cleanliness of city streets and roads, buildings, alleys, bridges, storm sewers and culverts, drainage ditches, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, barricades, etc.
· Operates vehicles and equipment assigned to the department.
· Paints curbs, street dividing lines, parking lots, etc.
· Cuts trees and tree limbs; removes leaves.
· Plants trees and flowers.
· Cut grass, weeds, trees and tree limbs.
· Installs/replaces street signs.
· Assists in salting/sanding streets and roads; removes snow.
· Assists in pouring concrete and making forms.
· May perform carpentry and/or plumbing duties.
· Assists with keeping equipment in working order; services equipment and assists with performing preventive maintenance on equipment; makes minor repairs and/or adjustments to equipment; forwards requests for major repairs to superiors.
· Cleans vehicles, equipment, and tools after use.
· Performs related duties as required.
· Assists other departments as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge of vehicles, equipment, materials, methods, tools, techniques, and procedures used in construction, installation, alteration, servicing, maintenance, repair and/or cleanliness of streets, roads, culverts, storm sewers, bridges, parks, and related facilities.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the functions, servicing and maintenance requirements of departmental mechanical equipment and machinery.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the geography of the service area.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn, work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with equipment, tools, vehicles, and procedures; and ability to comply with safety standards.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn, carpentry, concrete, etc.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn, traffic laws.
· Ability to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions, including but not limited to lifting 75 pounds repetitively on a frequent basis; carrying storm-sewer pipe; laying brick for catch basins; shoveling DGA rock; shovel and tamp asphalt and concrete; and physically removing obstructions from culverts.
· Ability to operate vehicles and equipment assigned to the department.
· Ability to assist with equipment and vehicle maintenance and servicing program, including preventive maintenance.
· Ability to perform work activities involving carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, black topping, pouring concrete, etc.
· Ability to detect mechanical problems and make minor repairs.
· Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
· Ability to assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of road signs and markers.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, department heads, other employees, and the general public.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED); previous work experience preferred, but not required.
Special Requirements: Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license or must obtain a commercial driver’s license during the first six months assigned to the class. Must participate in the city’s random drug and alcohol testing program as a condition of employment. This position is considered essential as related to inclement weather or natural disaster. Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.
Certification Requirements: Employees assigned to this class series are required to complete the Road Scholar Training assigned to the maintenance worker I class within three years, and the Road Master Training assigned to the maintenance worker II class during the next three years as provided by the Kentucky Department of Transportation and the University of Kentucky as a condition of continued employment. Must be qualified to supervise Class D inmates or must obtain qualification within six months after appointed to the class.
