Position Overview:
Veterinary Assistants perform various tasks that allow the veterinarian and veterinary technician to focus on the important tasks of diagnosing illness and administering treatments, respectively. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the veterinary team and ensuring the well-being of our animal patients. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting with animal care, handling and restraining animals during examinations and procedures, maintaining cleanliness and organization within the clinic, and providing support to both veterinary staff and clients. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with animals, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Veterinary Assistants aid veterinary technicians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of cleaning and animal handling duties. You have a significant role in creating a positive experience for both pets and clients.
Level 1
Responsibilities:
- Animal Handling: Safely and gently handle animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures. Restrain animals as needed to ensure the safety of both the animal and veterinary staff.
- Client Communication: Interact with clients in a courteous and professional manner, both in person and over the phone. Assist with scheduling appointments, answering inquiries, and providing basic information about clinic services and procedures.
- Cleaning and Sanitation: Maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the clinic, including examination rooms, treatment areas, kennels, and common areas. Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting surfaces to prevent the spread of disease.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records and documentation, including patient charts, treatment logs, and client communications. Ensure compliance with confidentiality and data protection regulations.
- Professional Development: Pursue opportunities for professional development and continuing education to expand knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine and animal care. Stay informed about industry trends and best practices.
Level 2

- Patient Care: Provide basic care and attention to hospitalized patients, including feeding, walking, and administering medications under the supervision of veterinary staff. Monitor patient behavior and alert veterinary staff to any changes or concerns.
Level 3

- Assisting Veterinary Procedures: Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with medical procedures, surgeries, and treatments. Prepare equipment and supplies, provide support during procedures, and monitor patient vital signs.
- Inventory Management: Assist with inventory management tasks, including receiving and stocking supplies, monitoring inventory levels, and organizing storage areas. Alert management to any shortages or discrepancies in inventory.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a veterinary assistant training program or relevant coursework is preferred but not required.
- Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or pet care facility is desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, and animal patients.
- Compassionate and empathetic demeanor, with a genuine love for animals and a commitment to their well-being.
- Physical stamina and dexterity to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments, as well as perform tasks that may require bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately, especially in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to accommodate clinic hours and patient care needs.
- Fear-free certification within the first 90 days of employment
- RECOVER CPR certification within the first 90 days of employment
Working Conditions:
- The Veterinary Assistant will primarily work in a clinical setting within the veterinary clinic, with regular interactions with animals, clients, and veterinary staff.
- The position may involve exposure to animal allergens, odors, and bodily fluids. Personal protective equipment will be provided as needed.
- The Veterinary Assistant may be required to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate clinic hours and patient care needs.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
