The Founder and Managing Attorney, worked as a legal aid attorney for about a decade assisting with all aspects of poverty law but heavily focused on those issues impacting the refugee community in her local area. After spending some time in governmental work and private law practice, Gustafson Law LLC was born in a full-time capacity in August of 2023. Our model of client centered service and virtual practice allows us to meet the immigration needs of our clients globally while keeping costs down. Locally, we have a large network of attorneys to assist in local court matters where needed as we handle a variety of legal needs. The Legal Assistant position will perform legal document preparation and administrative duties on behalf of Gustafson Law LLC. The Legal Assistant position has extensive client contact and works collaboratively with other members of the legal team. This position will report directly to the Managing Attorney.
Essential Duties:
§ Return office calls and emails, assist prospective clients in scheduling consults
§ Under the direction of the Attorney, take lead with client communication for intake of cases, collection of documents and information, and troubleshooting issues.
§ Provide competent case handling and management including proper use of software, tickler systems and confidentiality
§ Evaluates cases, communicate concerns, complete legal documents and forms, support letters and assemble supporting documents for attorney review. This may include but not limited to, visa applications, adjustment of status, naturalization, asylum as well as adoption and guardianship petitions and other related documents.
§ Gather, organize, and review supporting documentation.
§ Collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, and other team members to ensure efficient workflow and effective case management.
§ Assist with policy drafting as needed to ensure efficient systematic case management.
§ Conduct regular reviews of completed paperwork and files to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely follow-up.
§ Attends business meetings as assigned.
§ Manage case status, accounting and billing systems using firm software and document policies
§ Conduct pertinent research as necessary.
§ Stay update to date on changes to immigration and adoption laws, policies, and procedures to maintain proficiency in the field.
§ Performs all other tasks as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:
Bilingual in Spanish or Burmese (may consider other languages)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in paralegal studies, immigration law, or a related field.
- Must have 2 years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant in the immigration legal field or a similar field
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Possesses a supportive and responsive manner with customers and colleagues.
- Has ability to perform multiple tasks in complex working environment accurately and efficiently.
- Possesses above average computer knowledge and skills, Adobe, Excel, and Microsoft a must. Experience with Docketwise and Dropbox or other immigration software preferred.
- Has knowledge and experience necessary for independent decision-making ability.
