Job Summary:
CPJ is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to lead the organization’s individual giving strategy. The Deputy Director of Individual Giving leads a three-person team dedicated to raising $4.4M+ each year from individuals, reporting to and partnering with the Director of Development.
The Deputy Director develops and implements strategies to maintain and increase revenue from individual donors, including targeted major gift solicitations, direct mail campaigns, online campaigns, planned giving, and special events. The position will strongly focus on building and managing individual connections through in-person visits, and personalized, direct, written, and telephone communications are key. This is a senior position on the seven-person Development Team, working alongside the Deputy Director for Institutional Giving. They are also responsible for developing and managing talented and committed staff.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide dynamic and innovative leadership for CPJ’s individual and major giving fundraising efforts, building an infrastructure that supports short- and long-term goals.
- Work with the director and team to draft, manage, and oversee the annual budget and plan.
- Build and execute a strategy to deepen relationships with individual and major donors while launching initiatives to identify and target prospective, lapsed, and lapsing donors for restricted and unrestricted purposes; oversee and manage a major gifts officer to help accomplish these goals with attention to their portfolio.
- Maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects at the leadership level for continued stewardship and solicitation of leadership gifts.
- Oversee department output, particularly the creation of an individual and major giving annual plan, which includes input on the annual report and newsletters, appeals, direct mail, and other individual and major donor solicitation, as well as individual donor reports written in partnership with the deputy for institutional support.
- Oversee development department operations and team’s success, including gift processing, accounting, and acknowledgment, computer system and database operations, the tracking of gifts, donor stewardship, and working to manage and mentor staff to reach team goals.
- Integrate special events featuring CPJ’s Knight Press Freedom Center into a fundraising strategy.
- Work in close collaboration with the Advocacy/Communications team – as well as our Programs and Emergencies and Assistance teams – to enhance messaging at all levels of the organization, including CPJ’s digital fundraising efforts, keeping donors and the public informed, thanked, and involved; providing vehicles for more effective board and staff fundraising communications; and ensuring increased online giving opportunities, such as securities and cryptocurrency.
- Work in close collaboration with your finance counterpart on automating and integrating computer systems and ensuring that needs related to gift processing are met.
- In collaboration with the Development Director, manage the department:
- Recruitment: Select high-caliber candidates.
- Performance Management: Ensure staff is provided clear goals and regular performance feedback (including performance reviews).
- Development: Provide staff with appropriate career and professional development opportunities and meaningful coaching and mentoring.
- Engagement: Ensure staff is effectively connected and motivated to perform at their highest levels of achievement and contribute to creating a positive organizational culture.
- Administration: Oversee (review/approve) administrative processes (e.g., time off, expense reports, travel plans, employee data/records, etc.).
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education/Qualifications & Work Experience (Required):
- 7+ years of experience working with individual and major donors.
- Demonstrable passion for press freedom, free speech, and human rights.
- Superior communication and writing skills.
- Experience managing high-level events logistics and spearheading engagement with high-net-worth individuals.
- Entrepreneurial approach; ability to be flexible and multitask in a dynamic environment.
- Personal qualities of integrity and credibility.

The NYC office is working on a hybrid schedule of two days in-office (Wednesday and one other day of the employee’s/manager’s choosing), with the option of working three days remotely, subject to adjustment based on business needs.
Candidates residing in New York and the tri-state area are preferred. However, candidates from San Francisco, California/Bay Area may be considered.
