General Definition of Work
Performs work conducting investigations, inspecting crime scenes, interviewing witnesses and suspects, collecting evidence, testifying in court, completing required reports, examining records, monitoring suspects, identifying probable cause for search warrants and case submissions, submitting case files to the prosecutor’s office, arrest of subjects and related work as apparent or assigned.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Police Lieutenant.
Essential Functions
· Investigates and works all assigned criminal cases to include juvenile incidents, felony, misdemeanor, and status offenses.
· Responds to crime scenes in progress to investigate; processes crime scenes; identifies, photographs, preserves, and recovers evidence; develops and follows investigative leads until they are exhausted, or the case has been cleared.
· Conducts interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects.
· Completes paperwork for cases to be presented to the prosecutor's office.
· Testifies in court as required.
· Travels outside the jurisdiction to complete follow-ups on cases.
· Identifies key players in the local community involved in drug trafficking.
· Stays up to date on current drug trends within the local community.
· Verifies enough information to draft a search warrant as necessary.
· Attends necessary training and maintains certifications.

Minimum Qualifications
· High School diploma
· Internal candidates must have a minimum of 18 months of experience in Law Enforcement as a police officer or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· External candidates must have three to five years of experience as a Police Officer or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications
· Become a Certified Missouri Peace Officer from the MO Peace Officer Standards and Training Program (POST) within six months of hire.
· Complete New Detective training course within one year of hire.
· Complete CSI Training through an approved organization within one year of hire.
· Complete an Interview and Interrogation Training within one year of hire.
· Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position.
· May require possession of, or ability to obtain, specific licenses and/or certifications
depending on departmental assignment.
· Prior investigative experience preferred.
· A valid driver’s license in the State of Missouri upon hire.
