Model Cities is a private non-profit organization, established in 1967, that carries out human services, real estate development, and property management. Model Cities’ community services work includes the 7-county metro area, with most of the participants residing in Ramsey County.
Model Cities operates an emergency shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness in Ramsey County and is seeking on-call shelter staff to support shelter operations. Emergency shelter services will be provided for up to 64 men and women on a nightly basis and the shelter will operate daily from 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. The Shelter Advocate – On Call will work 4-, 8- or 12-hour overnight shifts on weekdays & some weekends. Participant populations may include those with chemical abuse issues, criminal histories and/or mental health issues.
Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Safe Space Coordinator, the Shelter Advocate will have a regular presence in the shelter and provide on-site support to participants to ensure basic needs are met while they stay at our shelter.
The On Call Shelter Advocate will coordinate and facilitate sleeping arrangements of participants, distribute snacks, beverages and hygiene supplies, as needed. They will also ensure bedding is laundered daily, data and intake information is completed for input into the Homeless Management Information System and/or other reporting systems and carry out established shelter processes and procedures in order to maintain a positive environment for participants and staff.
On Call Shelter Advocates must be able to participate in monthly staff meetings and other routine staff check-ins to ensure effective shelter operations.
The qualified On Call Shelter Advocate will have:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of previous experience providing direct social services to diverse populations.
- Experience working with those who may be experiencing homelessness, chemical dependency, unstable housing, and/or mental illness
- Previous experience working in a nonprofit agency desired.
- Driver’s license and successful criminal background check.
Schedules
- 4-, 8-, and 10-hour shifts between 9:00 pm - 5:00 am
- Must have the ability to work overnights on weekdays and weekends.
Compensation: $22.00 per hour
