Position Description
Under the general direction of the Counseling Services and Programs Department Chair and the Dean of Student Success, the part-time counselor is responsible for providing academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling to the diverse student population in credit and noncredit programs. The academic counselor will work closely with college students to assist, support and ensure that they are on the right path to achieve their educational and career goals. This position may include work in the evening and/or weekend to meet student needs as necessary. This position may be assigned to one or more of the counseling locations under the Counseling Services and Programs Department on the Ocean campus or at the Centers.
Location:
Assignment may be in Puente, New Directions, Umoja/ AASP , Veterans, General Counseling, LGBTQ , Career, Athletics, or any other counseling program under the Counseling Services and Programs Department. These assignment areas may vary by location but are primarily located at the Ocean Campus.
Job Duties
1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to assist students (on drop-in and appointment basis, in-person on campus, and online) in achieving their educational and career goals; develop appropriate education plans, curriculum, and/or programs under the Counseling Services and Programs Department.
2. Assist students to understand and develop educational and career goals and objectives. Determine students’ academic needs to facilitate use of student success resources in credit and non-credit programs.
3. Assist students in making informed educational and vocational/career decisions.
4. Assist students to build comprehensive student educational plans that include appropriate course selections and service referrals. Monitor student progress toward established goals.
5. Evaluate college transcripts from multiple institutions and how they apply towards various education and career goals.
6. Connect students with appropriate academic and student support services to enhance student success and timely completion in transferable level English and Math courses, ESL courses, and other certificate, degree, and transfer requirements; support the implementation of AB 705 and AB 1705.
7. Conduct (bilingual as necessary) workshops and orientation sessions to both credit and non-credit students.
8. Provide crisis counseling while demonstrating sensitivity and understanding of diverse, cultural, international, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and ethnic perspectives to assist students dealing with issues that could interfere with their success in college.
9. Assist in an early intervention counseling system, including referral and follow-up.
10. Teach AAPS and/or CRER classes to both credit and non-credit students as assigned.
11. Serve as Liaison and conduct outreach activities to other educational institutions (e.g., high schools, college departments and community-based organizations).
12. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with instructional and student affairs departments to enhance and support student learning, retention, and achievement.
13. Assist with the student learning and student services outcome assessment and the implementation of continuous quality improvement strategies.
14. Participate in Student Affairs Divisional Meetings, Counseling Services and Programs Department meetings, and professional development trainings.
15. Supports and engages in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps.
16. Participates in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism to center pedagogy.
17. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
2. Earned Master’s Degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from an accredited institution; or the equivalent;
OR
Earned Bachelor’s Degree in the discipline of the assignment from an accredited institution AND a valid California license in Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ); or the equivalent;
OR
Hold a fully-satisfied Life California Community College Counselor Credential (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications
1. At least one year (full-time or part-time) of demonstrated education counseling employment experience beyond the master’s degree in an accredited community college and/or other institution of higher education.
2. Demonstrated experience in community college counseling, including personal, career, transfer, and academic with a diverse student population.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing education plans for students and clearly explaining policies, procedures, and program requirements (e.g., certificate, degree, and/or transfer).
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
5. Demonstrated ability to use current and emerging technology and software programs (e.g., Banner, Degree Works) to provide in-person and online counseling services.
6. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to supporting and serving the historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
7. Ability to provide bilingual counseling in a language other than English, particularly Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish.
8. Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations in a community college or similar setting.
9. Experience in teaching counseling curriculum and conducting workshops or group orientation sessions.
10. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and assessing student learning outcomes at the course, program, department, division and institutional levels.
11. Demonstrated experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to support student equity, retention, success, and completion.
12. Evidence of instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.
13. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
